DA welcomes protector Oilgate review
Johannesburg - The DA on Tuesday welcomed Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's intention to review the "Oilgate" controversy.
"This is a step in the right direction," Democratic Alliance spokesperson Lindiwe Mazibuko said.
"The Oilgate scandal has been swept under the carpet for far too long."
This follows a report in the Sunday Times that businessman Sandi Majali, who died in December, left an unsigned letter about the matter. It reportedly states the money he had channelled from PetroSA to the ANC ahead of the April 2004 elections, was R18m, instead of the R11m initially mentioned.
Mazibuko said: "What is needed is a thorough investigation that takes into account all the new evidence that has come to light."
Former public protector Lawrence Mushwana should face the consequences if his own probe into the matter was found to have been an abuse of office to protect the ANC, she said.
