Johannesburg - A newly-announced task-team on the ANC Youth League will work on restoring the organisation, ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte said on Wednesday.

"Our assessment is that at the level of branches through the country there are quite strong branches of the youth league, although we need to do proper auditing of those branches," Duarte told reporters in Johannesburg.

"The regions of the youth league and the sub-regions of the youth league will need some attention by the national task-team," she said.

It would start by working with the ANCYL provincial structures which were still intact. It would then be able to make a recommendation about the African National Congress Youth League's national conference.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe announced the 22 member task-team on Wednesday. The ANC's national executive committee had already disbanded the ANCYL's national leadership.

"The NTT [national task team] will be tasked with the building of the ANCYL structures from branch, regional and provincial levels, as some of these are not functional at the moment," Mantashe said.

"They will also be preparing for the national conference of the youth league."

The convenor of the national task team would be Mzwandile Mosina and the co-ordinator, Magasela Mzobe.

The other members are: Victoria De Beer, Bongiwe Gigaba, Braam Hanekom, Thembinkosi Josopu, Mxolisi Kaunda, Bandile Masuku, Nokuthula Mbese, Nomvuyo Mhlakaza, Johan Mkhatshwa, Bridget Mogakwe-Seokamo, Smangaliso Mtengwana, Adelle Naidoo, Maruping Ntuli, Silence Ntshavheni, Mawethu Rune, Jolene Samuels, Joel Samuels, Joel Seabi, Shaka Sisulu, Rebone Tau, and Cynthia Theko.

Mantashe said the ANC's national working committee had avoided including people from the disbanded ANCYL national executive committee.

Only two former NEC members were on the list, for continuity. Those who had previously campaigned for leadership roles had also been excluded, to allow them to continue lobbying.

"We have been engaging extensively with our structures nationally to identify suitable comrades with necessary leadership skills, understanding of the ANC and ANCYL, as well as reputable characters," he said.

He said the people picked for the task team were ANC and ANCYL members able to do the work.

"Many of them have never been national leaders of the youth league but they have the depth of understanding of the youth league."
