E Cape ANC denies Zuma wife report

2012-06-20 15:42

Johannesburg - The Eastern Cape ANC has denied wanting taxpayers to fund only the first wife of President Jacob Zuma, provincial chairperson Pumulo Masualle said on Wednesday.

"This is a personal attack against the president, not a policy proposal of the ANC in the Eastern Cape," Masualle said in a statement.

The Times, quoting its sister newspaper the Daily Dispatch, said the provincial African National Congress wanted this to be discussed at the party's policy conference in Midrand next week.

According to the report, the provincial ANC's economic transformation commission said it supported a proposal that only wife number one, Sizakele Khumalo, be supported by taxpayers and not the other three wives.

Zuma is also married to Bongiwe Ngema, Nompumelelo Ntuli and Thobeka Mabhija.

"Only wife number one should get benefits from the state. Our understanding is that when a man decides to have more than one wife, you [the man] are able to support the others. Then deal with it," an unnamed delegate was quoted as saying.

Matter reported ‘in unethical and unfair manner’

Masualle said no such policy proposal was made at the Eastern Cape's provincial general council at the weekend.

"Recommendations from commissions are being put together to be consolidated by the special PEC [provincial executive committee] meeting."

He said "there is nothing suggesting the spousal support as a recommendation from any commission".

The PEC would meet on Friday to consolidate the recommendations from the commissions.

"The matter was reported by two newspapers in an unethical and unfair manner.

"What they did was to rely on their selfish sources and didn't even consider calling the ANC about the matter, to get our side of the story," he said.

A media briefing scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the outcomes of the provincial general council was postponed to Friday.

The Eastern Cape ANC's final proposals would be tabled at the ANC's policy conference.

All presidents all the world travell with a single world-wide known first lady except South Africa. Its very embarasing and traumatic to see different women with a president on different occasions. Lets talk about than behave like Ostrich with head in the sand and make it look like it is a TABOO.

was and is, still a brillant idea, he and his wifes earn more than Americas presidant and his wife, for lot less work done.

      Sharon - 2012-06-20 18:02

Why deny it? It is a bloody fine idea!! Implement it, already! Can there be restrictions on the children as well, while we are at it?

Only one should be supported. Not all! The average SA citizen has only got 1 wife. zuma should provide for the other wives and children himself.Should NOT be the tax payers problem. Can I make my family member zuma's problem as well?

It is an embarrassment that South Africa's head of state has 4 first ladies. Zuma should support the others as well as their children of which he is the father.

Why should I pay for his wives and his lifestyle? Who is he? Let the masses support him and his wives man!! I work hard to support my 1 wife, let him work for his!!

  • indianajohn - 2012-06-20 17:35

If the government expects the taxpayer to support the president's multiple "wives" then they should introduce public wife grants. Like a child grant, but for your wife, and the more wives you have, the more you get. Sound ridiculous? It is. But to not do so is example number ten million of their pathetic hypocracy and blatant theft.

  • braamc - 2012-06-20 17:44

  • keneoemosiuoa.kenny - 2012-06-20 18:13

Are Zuma's wives not qualified enough to be employed in one of the Departments ? If not, I think they are still young to go back to school so as to prepare for thei future, that's what all wives do outside there. As for Makhumalo, she can start a poultry project.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-06-20 18:36

There is no reason why the taxpayer should support the President's wives and children AT ALL. It is not the people who decided on this perk, but the politicians themselves. The President receives an all too generous salary and should support his family on this, like all good South Africans do.

  • tshepo.mojapelo1 - 2012-06-20 18:45

Its so amaizing...,talking of women's rights!!! Why one woman should be supported by the state and not others???? We elected Zuma knowing exactly the number of wifes and nyatsis,so it shouldn't be a problem now let's just get over it...

      Billy - 2012-06-20 19:06

you elected the anc, the anc elected zuma, along those lines wasnt it?

      grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-06-20 19:08

Tshepo... I bet you don't work or pay tax! I would rather my tax went to looking after the poor and homeless. He earns a FATCAT salary (plus VAT) so he can afford to pay for them himself. And the custom goes.... You may ONLY have as any wives as you can afford. We, the people, can't afford all his wives and children and their lavish lifestyles

      Ally - 2012-06-20 19:10

What an idiot! The smart ones among us certainly did not vote for Zuma. I have contributed more to this country than that man and his concubines have. And I'm a whole lot smarter than he is and a lot better looking than his bunch of broads. So it's time the state paid me for doing next to nothing, except jet-setting around and avoiding important issues etc etc. Bring it on.

  • grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-06-20 19:22

The tax payers money spent on private education for his 21 kids would educate how many under-privileged kids? The R64million 'home improvements' for all his wives would have put a decent basic roof over how many families? LOGIC !!! Who is he looking after? ALL the people or just his own? ONE of his lavish drunken parties would feed how many starving FAMILIES? Think ANC think... Its not about black and white anymore. We abandoned that nearly 20 years ago! Its about US - the people - the ones who 'employ' these thieves. They raping this land

  • sally.mogashoa.3 - 2012-06-20 19:29

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-06-20 19:38

  • Charnelle - 2012-06-20 20:12

..I am only now beginning to understand why his "spear" looks so shabby, overworked, neglected, shrunk, and useless, thanks to the Goodman gallery. With all those walking busses (arses) he's married to, service. Heard a rumour that his "spear" is like a chimney, - not that its so long or thick but so bloody full of soot, he employs a chimney sweep full time to keep it presentable. Probably just a rumour though

  • Alf - 2012-06-20 20:16

Only one first lady! The others are second-, third and fourth hand ladies! The wholesale marriage scam is Zuma's way of fleecing the state coffers. That entire lot costs the tax payer around R 20 million per year! Next thing he wants the tax payer to foot the bills to keep his mistresses as well!

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-06-20 20:17

In my opinion the President should only be allowed one wife to benefit from the state funding....it's not an attack on Zuma personally....it's just the right thing to do, but what about all his children...who is going to pay for their schooling(no doubt, private)? Zuma extended family is costing the taxpayer a small fortune...not right when so many are suffering....

  • lerumo.mkhonto.3 - 2012-06-21 18:45

Is not in our world renowned constitution that a man can marry as many women as they want? South Africa has a diverse society, ethnocentrism should have no place here.
