Johannesburg - The ANC's Nelson Mandela Bay regional secretary denied reports on Monday that he was involved in a physical fight with his chairman over their preferred candidates for the party's presidency.

"Nothing like that happened between me and the chairperson [Nceba Faku] in terms of a physical fight," Zandisile Qupe said.

"There is no way that something like that can happen. He is my elder and it is not in our culture. People are just spreading stories."

The Star reported on Monday that Qupe was quoted in an Eastern Cape newspaper as saying the regional executive committee made a decision to back President Jacob Zuma, who is also president of the party.

Different views

Faku told the same newspaper that he supported deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe.

The fight then reportedly broke out between the two at the African National Congress's regional headquarters in Port Elizabeth.
Qupe confirmed that he and Faku had differing views.

"I have a personal view which is to support the president. This view was endorsed by the REC," he said.

"The chairperson had his own personal view, but you can't as chairperson voice your own view when the REC has made a decision."

An unnamed source told The Star that the two "exchanged vulgar language and punches started flying".

Qupe and Faku were then allegedly told to keep the fight "under wraps" because it would have brought the party into disrepute.
