Durban - The controversy around the construction of elephant sculptures at Durban’s Warwick interchange will be resolved soon, the ANC in the eThekwini region said on Wednesday.

“We have told our people in council (eThekwini Municipality) how we want this matter to be resolved. The matter will be addressed very soon,” African National Congress regional secretary Sbu Sibiya told Sapa.

The construction of three elephants at Durban’s Warwick interchange was stopped after ANC bosses in the region objected that they represented the Inkatha Freedom Party's logo.

ANC regional secretary James Nxumalo said: “The matter was not handled properly. There was no consultation with the councillors before they were constructed.”

He said the ANC wanted the interchange to have statues of all Big Five animals, not just elephants.

“This does not mean that we don’t like elephants.”
