Durban - Two DA ward councillors have defected to the ANC, claiming that support for the DA has deprived communities in Durban's northern suburbs of service delivery.

Top African National Congress leaders welcomed Ronnie Veeran and Roy Moodley, the Democratic Alliance's councillors for wards 48 and 49, said at a press conference in Phoenix, Durban, on Thursday.

Veeran said his decision to defect had been in the offing for some time.

"You can understand our frustration when, year after year, when the DA makes a principled stand, as they call it, to vote against the council's budget, which incorporates both the operating and capital budget.

"As a consequence of that, is that we do not get service delivery and infrastructure development in our respective wards."

The ANC's provincial leader Senzo Mchunu said nothing had been promised to the two men and that they had had approached the ANC.

DA provincial chair Hannif Hoosen said the party had become aware that both men were trying to recruit members for the ANC.

"These two colleagues were recruiting members to the ANC. We suspect this is part of a broader plan to destabilise the DA."

He said they were suspended on Tuesday night and handed in their resignations from the party on Wednesday.

He said they had been asked to explain their actions, but that both had refused to answer questions.
