Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg has referred allegations of corruption against a member of its mayoral committee to the ethics committee, it said on Monday
MMC for public safety Matshidiso Mfikoe was apparently accused of using City Parks' money to buy herself birthday and Valentine's Day presents, to host a birthday party, and to have a cosmetic makeover.
"The speaker has acted swiftly on the request for investigation by the DA [Democratic Alliance] and asked for substantial evidence to warrant an investigation," council spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said in a statement.
"All interested parties are invited to forward any information which could assist the ethics committee to speedily address these serious allegations."
Tugwana said Mfikoe had indicated her readiness to co-operate with the investigation.
She has been responsible for the city's public safety portfolio since May 2011.
