Johannesburg - Limpopo's former safety, security and liaison MEC, George Phadagi, died on Sunday, police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Phadagi died in a private hospital in Pretoria on Sunday morning. The cause of his death was not known at this stage.

"The entire [SA Police Service] Limpopo management wish to express a word of deep condolence to his family, friends and colleagues in government," said provincial police Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe.

Phadagi was a patriot who loved his country, his province and its people, Mpembe said in a statement.

"He will be remembered as a true crime buster who served with dignity, distinction and loyalty."
