FYL demands Marikana miners' release

2012-09-01 20:32

Johannesburg - The national director of public prosecutions and the ministry of justice must release the 270 arrested Marikana miners, Friends of the Youth League (FYL) said on Saturday.

"We call on all people in South Africa to increase the voice that demands the immediate release of the arrested mineworkers," FYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said in a statement.

"When they appear for bail hearing on Thursday, workers should be released on free bail because the arrested workers do not have the money to pay for bail."

On 16 August, police opened fire on striking workers gathered on a hill near Lonmin's Marikana mine, in North West, killing 34 of them and wounding 78.

A group of 270 miners were arrested and charged with public violence.

On Thursday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced they would also face murder and attempted murder charges for the deaths of their colleagues.

The NPA's contentious decision was questioned on Friday.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said he would seek clarity on the reasons for the move, while legal experts and political parties roundly condemned the decision.

Shivambu said: "Now that some elements within the state are beginning to notice the sickness and madness of those who decided to kill workers, arrest those they could not kill and charge them with the murder committed by the police, further actions and interventions should be made."

The FYL was calling on the NPA to drop the charges and wait for the judicial commission of inquiry to conclude its work.

"Mineworkers should be given space to continue fighting for the R12 500 per month minimum wage for all.

"The so-called investors who continue to brutally and fatally exploit workers should appreciate that workers should share in the country's wealth through reasonable salaries and income and working conditions," he said.

The FYL would be going to all the mines in the country to address protesting workers and those who were not protesting.

"[We will] agitate those who have not yet downed tools to do so and join in the mining revolution whose outcome will be a minimum wage of R12 500 per month for all mineworkers and improved working conditions," said Shivambu.

From nowhere these guys think they can just make demands and the president will just roll over. Too much strong muti. Time for the youth league and their friends to have a reality check and understand they are irrelevant in the big picture. And used condom better shut up before he gets shut up for good.

  • michael.rampatla - 2012-09-01 21:11

FYL the defender of the freedom charter, we will continue to fight against capitalists minority and exploitation of the desperate black majority. If investors can't look after the masses why do we need them

      Steven Trollip - 2012-09-01 21:37

the masses don't want the jobs MAL lema will supply them with food and money

      dan.ledwaba.5 - 2012-09-01 21:48

Michael, you lost me at minority and majority. The desparate blacks are ONLY those without jobs who WANT to work, your miners have (maybe had) jobs.

      robynne.els.1 - 2012-09-01 22:18

Michael its not the investors job to look after the masses! And if you don't know why we need investors then I suggest you just stop making comments because you just end up sounding stupid!

      juannepierre - 2012-09-02 04:27

Out of millions of people in south Africa you know what group really is massive, the unemployed. More people than all the mines could house.

Strikers don't amass and sit there with spears, machetes and allegedly a few of them with guns after burning 2 security guards alive, hacking 2 policemen to death and killing 4 miners from another mine just days before if you want peace and not violence or murder. And you certainly don't advance towards a police line with machetes and spears unless you intend to either kill them or give the police the impression that you want to kill them. This to me fully legitimizes the response the miners are getting. It's really weird how so many news channels in Europe only look at the miners side of things with regards to their demands made for increase in wages and what not,but they don't seem to wanna focus on the whole attitude of the miners in going about their dispute with Lonmin in them brandishings their weapons at police and what have you in the first place. I you have a dispute with your Company about unfair wages then why do you need to bring a spear, panga and knobkerrie to resolve the issue? What's your intent? That ain't peaceful now is it? Also tell the FYL to get lost while you at it.

      crracker.crackerr - 2012-09-01 21:32

I think one should just make known to those who may not quite appreciate what a MACHETE really is. "The machete is a large cleaver-like cutting tool. The blade is typically 32.5 to 60 centimetres (12.8 to 24 in) long and usually under 3 millimetres (0.12 in) thick." The miners actually spit on and polished their weapons. So eager they were for a confrontation.

      flower.fourie - 2012-09-01 23:06

And yet most south Africans don't even see it... I thought it would take a few more months for the country to fall apart. But it seems like some people just don't have the patience.

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-01 21:27

With such a massive head of a melon one would think Floyd shivambu is full of good ideas but not at all because that big head of his is just full of water, each time he opens his mouth it just confirms that.

      Steven Trollip - 2012-09-01 21:46

Many commentators are worried about the vast majority of youths who remain uneducated and who therefore lack the right intelligence to reason out any set of facts rationally. One even wonders if responding to you is worth it, in terms of your intellectual grasp or capacity.

      gngaleka - 2012-09-02 02:56

Claiming to speak for every (non white)..- and every other person who doesn't agree with your views is stupid. Whew. I would have been worried if i counted you as among the (clever) people in this country.

      juannepierre - 2012-09-02 04:34

Letlaparhonny, maybe don't learn how to spell from a cell phone, I know textbooks are difficult to come by, but really all you need is one so try get one. You have the ANC, the ANCYL and the FYL... None agree on anything so what makes them connected? It's called greed, and greed sees no colour, only conquest.

Amid the confusion, madness, exploitation, threats etc of the current Marikana debacle, let it not be forgotten that Zuma's son and Mandela's grandson took over Aurora and stripped it of assets, exploited mine workers for years and have apparently got away with it. Justice and restitution must come to those miners and their families as well.
