Bloemfontein - A former senior DA member in the Northern Cape, Chris Liebenberg, joined the Congress of the People (Cope) on Tuesday.

“Today [Tuesday] he has joined Cope to drive the process of building a strong, viable opposition,” said Pakes Digetsi, Northern Cape Cope spokesperson.

The party said Liebenberg brought experience and expertise, especially in elections and fund raising, which would be a great asset to Cope.

South Africa will hold general elections later this year to elect a new National Assembly, and new provincial legislatures.

Liebenberg served 16 years as a member of the provincial legislature previously representing the DA.

He was no longer a member of the DA when he joined Cope, as he resigned a few years ago.

Digetsi said Cope and the DA already had a coalition on municipal level.

“If the figures are what we expect them to be after the election, we would be able to form a coalition on provincial level and govern the province.”

Digetsi said the two parties would run separate election campaigns and the results would dictate the form of the coalition.

Liebenberg said he was convinced Cope was the party to support.
