Gauteng govt applies to merge Midvaal, Emfuleni

2012-05-31 14:37

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government has applied to merge Emfuleni with the DA-run Midvaal municipality to form a metro, according to a report on Thursday.

Gauteng local government and housing department head Mongezi Mnyani said the province had been studying how to increase the economic viability of municipalities, Business Day reported.

Mnyani said the province was exploring various options regarding Midvaal, including merging Emfuleni and Midvaal into a metro, or merging Midvaal and Emfuleni into a category B municipality, and including the Lesedi local municipality in the Ekurhuleni metro.

The changing of municipal borders would mean the Democratic Alliance would no longer run a town in Gauteng, the report said. The DA retained control of Midvaal region in last year's local government elections, despite efforts by the African National Congress to take control.

Mnyani denied it was a political move.

"There’s nothing political about it. We want to make sure municipalities are viable... to ensure seamless development across the province."

DA Gauteng local government spokesperson Fred Nel told Business Day on Wednesday there were "definitely political motives" behind the move, as metros had not always proven more viable.

Mnyani said the Midvaal municipality could make submissions to the Municipal Demarcation Board, which would ultimately make the decision.

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-31 15:51

He probably sits and looks at the map...and the DA zone is like a little red spot/pimple on his nose he just cant wait to squash

      Eternity - 2012-05-31 16:35

Is there no end to the power hunger? Come on - just one city in GP under DA management and it will be taken away in a "non-political" merge? Watch both with be run into the ground in time if this happens

A number to keep your fat cat ANC friends in power? yes? Just wait until that number becomes unhappy... the ANC never led a real revolution... the next one will be a real revolution, so laugh bru, laugh... but your laughter is actually the laughter of a sick disgusting human being that supports poverty and children being uneducated and malnutritioned OR... let me laugh at your brothers and sisters for you... laugh at them for voting so that they can stay poor and the people they follow get rich... laugh at them because no one cares about them... , no wait... you are laughing for me... carry one.

  • Mike - 2012-05-31 15:00

The cANCer can not afford to have an example of something that works right in the middle of municipalities that are falling apart. The people might just get the wrong idea and want the same.

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-05-31 15:47

Tjo Batho, I believe that they are trying to drown the midvaal municipality as well. they did with emfuleni and lesedi! HAi it's tru if you cant beat them tehn steal it.

  • Teuneman - 2012-05-31 15:08

They also want to stop production of Panado. Because it's white and it works!

      Nyiks11 - 2012-06-01 08:27

      don't forget cocaine

  • Jean - 2012-05-31 15:31

ANC you are just sad, but I guess that is what fear does when you want to stay in power.

  • Ryno - 2012-05-31 15:37

this is just because the Midvaal Municipality is run by the DA!!!

      Erna - 2012-05-31 15:53

Of course it is. They think we're all as dof as they are!

      Erna - 2012-05-31 15:54

Of course it is. They think we're all as dof as they are!

  • Ryno - 2012-05-31 15:38

    what a bunch of c*nts...

  • JAbu.R15 - 2012-05-31 15:49

This is so wrong, why is the ANC the player and the referee in all these matters? I lived in emfuleni having grew up in lesedi (Heidelberg), these municipalities are run like tuck shops. now the anc sees a well run municipality in meyerton, what do they do: take it by force. anc are really bullies!

  • Erna - 2012-05-31 15:57

And yet they still think they are democratic!

  • cyanideandhappiness - 2012-05-31 16:02

You might as well call this theft, the public should vote on the matter and only during the next municipal elections so the DA can serve the terms they were voted in for! F U ANC, you're so desperate that we can see the lies and evil directly behind everything you do... Fix problems you have control over and stop trying to steal things you dont have. Disgusting...

  • djeloff - 2012-05-31 16:40

Very shrewd and a low blow by the ANC. Making times interesting. I can't wait to see how the DA handles this. The ANC knows it is fighting a losing battle, and are trying different ways to make up for lost ground.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-31 17:18

    Why not ask the people?

      Paulus - 2012-05-31 17:29

Whats the point in asking the people? They TELL their people what to say.

  • Dee - 2012-05-31 19:26

Dear Mr Mnyani PLEASE work FOR the people on this one. Job creation is something South Africa has to set aside party and Cosatu politics on - and GET REAL about!!! Midvaal represents proof that good governance attracts investment (e.g Ferrero Rocher etc etc etc) and consequent job creation. So either invest effort into fixing the maladministration of Jhb - or leave DA running Midvaal ... or design some way for DA to take over in a greater portion of the NATIONAL CRISIS unemployment areas. This is not a political party plea on my part. If the "Purple Freaks Party" had demonstrated a track record of governance and investor attraction - I would ask the same in the interests of the people of this country.

      jmeyer235 - 2012-05-31 21:46

I totally agree with you on that one. But in what world will the ANC ask the DA to take over some of the "areas" in this country. They will rather try to fix it on their own and if they fail they will completely destroy it so that no one else can fix it. The ANC will rather destroy this whole country than to let the DA govern it.

      Dee - 2012-05-31 23:04

I understand that 'legacy' means ANC should / will continue to rule at overall national level, but surely it is expedient and possible to let a mere 13% of national vote party to take over at a few 'economic life blood' provincial / municipal levels? Recent past 'growth' has been via mainly by Govt job creation. This is not sustainable. The 'gravy train' (let alone citizens!) cannot be fed in any way without real economic growth. And there cannot be economic growth with provincial govts collapsing. So with this logic - If I was on a gravy train - I'd be worried, and would sure as heck find it expedient to let the opposition earn my keep :))))

I thnk Gauteng govrmnt met the requiremnts. If is not lyk dat they cn summit the dispute at relevant plat form. There is no political motive behind. This is a administration.
