Cape Town - The government is to launch a campaign related to South Africa celebrating two decades of freedom next year, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said on Thursday.

Speaking during debate on the Government Communication and Information System's (GCIS) R396.7m budget for this year, he told MPs the government was conducting a review of the country's achievements since its first fully-democratic elections on 27 April 1994.

"This financial year, we will begin with a campaign to mobilise society towards consolidating our democracy in the context of the 20 years of our freedom."

GCIS and the presidency would take stock of what the country had achieved since 1994.

"This will form the narrative that government will use to focus the nation's attention on our achievements, and to motivate South Africans to work together to do more, and to ensure every South African receives the [government] services that are due to them," he said.
