Housing scam: ANC official to be charged

2012-06-28 07:39

Durban - Criminal charges will be laid against an eThekwini ANC branch chairperson for allegedly taking money for RDP houses which never materialised, the DA said on Wednesday.

"We will be laying charges of fraud and corruption," Sydenham councillor Jethro Lefevre said on Wednesday.

The chairman apparently charged residents of Lacey road informal settlement in Sydenham, Durban between R4 000 and R8 000 for each RDP house.

"The Democratic Alliance was contacted by many residents who had been allegedly ripped off in this scam, and 12 affidavits have been provided," Lefevre said.

These would be handed to the police on Thursday.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said the allocation of RDP houses was done through the policy guidelines of the municipality.

"The municipality facilitates the process of RDP houses. The allocation cannot be done by anyone outside the municipality, because that would be illegal," he said.

Mofokeng said the DA was within its rights to lay criminal charges.

Bwahahahahaha damn agents it just gets better and better. If they not stealing from the government they are stealing from their own people. And i bet you they are going to get to a point in the case where there is not enough evidence to prosecute and then he is going to become the new minister of housing.

      infijar.ken - 2012-06-28 08:27

There is not too much difference between these type of people, and priests from unscrupulous churches (Universal for one), who steal from the poor. They replace the money of the poor with hope. The poor are the easiest targets, since they live in perpetual hopelessness.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:15

Carolyn. at points where the elderly go to collect their pensions every month, many offcials want their share. They make the old people pay them R400 otherwise they don't get the rest of their pension. It is enough to make one puke.

  • scouter.fourone - 2012-06-28 08:05

The only reason anyone would pay an ANC official R4-8k directly would be in the belief that such an official is corruptible. The same reason some businesses donate money and attend your functions Mr phosa.

      Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-06-28 08:21

i challenge you, just today, have a speech which does not discriminate or hate, i will do the same, perhaps one more will see and join in, we will be making a difference. Im black, but against all of this and do not hate people because of how they look. but the general attack offends me!

      rob.baggaley - 2012-06-28 08:28

      Whats NOT to hate !

      phae.rayden - 2012-06-28 08:51

Ntuthuko M Simelane, please accept my apologies for these ignorant spiteful people. Its also good to realise these guys do not reflect how the majority of Afropeans think. You and I will continue to get along perfectly with eachother, they (raCists and haters of all colours) can rot from the inside from the poison of their own perceptions.

      Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-06-28 09:10

Rob, humans, those who were created in this same image as you, i never really got to understand a fuss about this, if human nature favors those who look more like you, what motivates this hideous hate? i dont hate you Rob, i dine and sign deal and club with white and indian people, they visit my house,my kids go out with theirs,we should be an educated generation that eradicates this loathe, nobody wins at the end,you insult me i get bruised, but it takes hate from your part too,so there's bitterness. Nobody wins

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:17

Ntuthuko, are you challenging us or the rulig party you voted into power?.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:36

Phae,by depicting others as ignorant because they have an opinion different from yours is immature. Strange how you people always come up with strong terms like hate when people are making use of their democratic rights to having their own opinion. There si no hate here, just a general concern for the wellbeing of this country and it's people. If you weren't so hungup on 'hate' so would you be.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:44

Ntuthuko. We fought for change because we believed in the Freedom Charter. We gave up our own dreams to work for a Democratic South Africa. I don't hate anyone and respect all people. But it breaks my heart to realize we have sold out South Africa and it's people to the same type of scurge we were fighting against in the first place. The old regime didn't worry about the majority and neither do the ones in power today. If the ANC were a government to be proud of do you think people would be voicing their discontent here?.

      Dee - 2012-06-28 13:27

      I stand with you Ntuthuko.

      6Lady6Cadaver6 - 2012-07-12 15:33

How do you know Ntuthuko voted ANC? I agree the hate has gone too far. Its time people stopped fighting eachother and fought for what is really important. Its easy to insult someone when you are sitting behind you pc... Focus on the real issue here and leave your baggage at the door please.

  • andrew.arde - 2012-06-28 08:16

      Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-06-28 08:17

  • Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-06-28 08:16

Dear God, why did you leave this place? come back now please, remove these thieves from our throne! we have nowhere else to turn to, our brothers victimize us, others will discriminate us(you do remember God before 94),we need your divine intervention.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:48

Braamc yes we must care for the poor Zuma said. In the meantime he spend more that R140million on plane trips and his compound has been upgraded for millions. I wish he would, for once, say who the 'we'are he is always talking about.

  • Steve - 2012-06-28 08:48

And this is merely a drop in the huge ocean of this corruption scourge that has become the cANCer way. They obviously look upon it as "pay-back time." If these thieves are so deviously clever to figure out these scams, why do they not apply the same energy into doing their jobs. Answer: It has always been easier for them to steal and plunder. Midnight shopping has just got more sophisticated.

  • Neville - 2012-06-28 09:24

Please guys do not personalise your comments, their is good and bad in every race, attack the issue not the person,

      Dee - 2012-06-28 13:35

Sigh .... indeed. Anyone reading here would think there are no Caucasians involved in crime - ranging from just recent 'caretakers of wildlife' standing in the docks for their part in killing rhinos to a very pale head of social services fleecing the elderly and weakest in society. Neither pigment nor political affiliation determines moral fibre.

      johan.maree.5036 - 2012-07-12 17:14

Jay, don't see where his race comes into the equation. I blame him, not his race for HIS corruption and greed. Maybe I missed the race comment further up... Still think we should attack him, BECAUSE of the issue...

Hi there this is the man who has had to face these poor people 2 of whom are 90 and 87 respectively and hear their side of what has been done. I cannot in good conscience understand how the ANC never did anything about this while they had oversight of this area for years? I will be at the police station at 12pm and doing my duty for the poorest people in the ward!!

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-28 11:11

In many places you are not going to get a house if you don't vote for the ANC. So taking money is just the next step and it happens everywhere. Thanks to the DA another corrupt ANC official can bite the dust. I hope the people know who to vote for next time.

Hand the criminal over to the PRIVATE people he defrauded or stole from. They will not get any recompense from the justice system. Tell that the magistrate must award them DAMAGES. They actually CAN do this if they make the demand.

He probably got to become ANC branch chairperson through bribing others (with his stolen loot) to support his nomination. New Collective noun: ANC branch = A grouping of politically motivated thieves.
