How to register for the 2014 national and provincial elections:

- Check that you have a green South African identity document with a barcode. If you don't have one, apply for one at the department of home affairs.

- If you have already registered to vote in a previous national or local election, you can check whether your name is on the voters roll. Do this by checking the voter registration details on the IEC website or send an SMS with your ID number to 32810.

- If you haven't ever registered, you need to go along to your closest voting station during voter registration weekend on 9-10 November 2013. To find out where this is, simply type in your address on the IEC's handy voting station finder. Once your area is displayed, click on the blue cross icon, which will highlight your voting district, and display your voting station. Clicking on the voting station will give details such as its street name and number.

- If you are unable to make it during this time, you can make an appointment at your closest municipal electoral office. Remember, registration needs to be completed before the election date is proclaimed.

- To register, you need to apply in person and take your ID book or smartcard ID, or a Temporary Identity Certificate if you don't have an ID book.

- If you're living overseas, you won't be able to register just yet - not until the electoral amendment bill 2013 is approved by Parliament and signed into law by President Jacob Zuma. This is expected to happen before the end of November. Keep an eye on the IEC website or its Twitter or Facebook pages for more information. Remember, you'll need your South African ID book as well as your passport to register.
