Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma faces regular criticism from opposition parties over his song Awuleth’ Umshini Wami (“Bring my machine gun”), but on Thursday the tide seemed to have turned for him.

Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille gave her wholehearted support, and promised that the ID would sing along with him.

In response to his State of the Nation address, De Lille praised Zuma’s announcement that he would review the performance of Cabinet ministers regularly.

“The ID is happy to hear that ministers’ achievements will be monitored and evaluated for the first time,” said De Lille.

“We have asked, several times, that ministers be held accountable for their responsibilities and their actions.

We hope that you (Zuma) will make these achievement adjudications known to the public every three months or so, in order for us to be able to keep track of successes and failures.”

She said the party hopes that Zuma will be the first head of state to fire a minister due to incompetence or failure to spend his budget.

“This is one time Umshini Wami will be relevant and we in the Independent Democrats we will be prepared to sing with you Mr President," said De Lille.
