Cape Town - Seventy-four political parties have yet to say whether they are still active, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Friday.

"Every year, we send a note that... enquires whether the political party still exists," IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said.

She said 218 political parties were registered at last count in the country.

"We currently have 152 unrepresented political parties... After sending a notice, 78 have renewed their registration."

The remaining 74 would be given a month or two, until around August, to respond.

Should they fail to do so, the commission would decide on further steps.

Unrepresented parties do not have a seat in the National Assembly or a provincial legislature.

Bapela said these parties were harder to monitor as their activities were less visible.

The next general election would take place next year.
