IEC inundated with enquiries

Johannesburg - The number of enquiries about voter registration to the Independent Electoral Commission's toll-free number on Friday sky-rocketed to nearly 15 000 phone calls.
The IEC said in a statement: "Clearly, this situation has resulted in a number of calls being dropped and many others waiting for longer periods for service.
"Despite the increase in the number of agents in the call centre as well as an increase in telephone lines, the numbers of calls being received are still beyond the benchmarks that we had anticipated."
The IEC called on potential voters to be patient when calling the toll-free line number, especially those who need to establish where they need to register.
The IEC expressed its appreciation for the interest and participation shown by eligible voters in the registration process and assures them of its commitment to reach everyone, the statement read.
