Info bill a threat to freedom: Gordimer

2012-05-03 14:49

Johannesburg - Nobel prize winning author Nadine Gordimer has condemned the protection of state information bill, calling it a threat to freedom in South Africa.

In an article published on the website of the New York Review of Books she compared it to apartheid laws.

Her article, "South Africa: The New Threat to Freedom", dated April 24, was one of the website's top stories on Thursday morning.

"The right to know must continue to accompany the right to vote," she wrote.

The bill "has been and continues to be seen as an obvious means of concealing the corruption that has become a way of South African life for many".

The bill was passed by Parliament last year, but has not yet been made law.

It prescribes prison sentences for whistleblowers who expose corruption. Under the bill, possession of information that directly or indirectly benefits a foreign state will be criminalised.

Gordimer accused President Jacob Zuma of using "manipulative tactics" to ensure the bill gained legal acceptance. He intended to seek changes to the Constitution, and to review the powers of the Constitutional Court, she said.

"The Constitutional Court is the last line of defence to preserve press freedom, indeed all our freedoms."

Hectic.. Looks like JZ is popular in the US. Perhaps they'l make a movie, starring Morgan Freeman, although its not often he has to play a villain to freedom.. :/

Nadine Gordimer obviously has a powerful voice in international opinion. Maybe Charlize could star - playing the great Nadine as the movie's heroine!?

SOuth AFrican have to stand together on this one. This bill will turn the country into a dictatorship. We will become just another African Banana Republic where the right of the individual are not respected. Do you want us to become Zimbabwe? Congo? We need to fight this together. ANARCHY IF WE HAVE TO!!!

The point is the ANC's concept of democracy is freedom to rule for ever and to govern never.

Press freedom is in place. But the problm is our journalists who are so abusive. Most of them, they are a bldy agent of a centain organisations to destroy our rulling party and the govmnt. News24 is one of the bldy agents and u are busy dividing our nation and promoting hatrets between whites and blacks by allowing a silly comments from both side. All comments on ANC and Govmnt negetive issues are printed in red. For DA and Israel are printed on blue even if they are too bad. We r watching. That is why people wil vote for ANC til Jesus comes. The more u bedmouth the ANC is the more u campain for it.

Every comment made against the ANC is suppressed by them asking or rather demanding an apology even though the comments are true and realistic. In this case would JZ have the guts to demand an apology from NADINE GORDIMER for guarding our constitution which was such a mammoth task to have it drafted and put into effect.OH1 GOD What is becoming of our rainbow nation, can one take a moment to at least see the colours of our rainbow.

Having caused such a huge economic disaster and having spent all the monies which was allocated for the funding of housing, employment, education, health etc,why is the government so scared to be responsible for their unruly actions. Now they don't want the people to know the truth. What have they got to hide?

  • Adam - 2012-05-10 21:25

This is really not enough. We need a transparent governance. No more compromises.
