Johannesburg - A ward councillor was shot and killed in Jozini near St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday, police said.

Velpahi Samuel Gumede was transporting children with his bakkie from Hlalanathi to the local pre-school when he apparently received a phone call from someone asking to be towed, Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

When he arrived at the point of the purported breakdown, he was attacked and killed.

"His motor vehicle was burnt beyond recognition. The motive for the killing is unknown and police are investigating a case of murder."

The Inkatha Freedom Party Women's Brigade sent its condolences to Gumede's family.

"We are numbed by this tragic loss of a man who is committed to working in his community," national chairperson Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa said in a statement.
