Cape Town - The controversial chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on sport and recreation, Butana Komphela, said the context in which he had used the K-word needed to be understood.
At a meeting of this committee on Tuesday, he said that ex-Springbok rugby players who thought Peter de Villiers was not equal to the task of being the national coach, were subscribing to an obsolete philosophy.
Komphela explained that he did not say, "De Villiers is a kaffir."
"The only thing I tried to say was that people who are against De Villiers are showing a we-don't-want-to-be-led-by-a-kaffir attitude.
"That is what I was trying to say within the context."
His remark came a short while after Irvin Khoza, chairperson of Fifa's local organising committee, told a journalist "not to think like a kaffir".
After controversy over his utterance and criticism from the SA Human Rights Commission, Khoza apologised.
