Land reform: DA to lay charges against Lamola

2012-06-22 16:59

Johannesburg - Criminal charges will be laid against ANC Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola over his comments on land reform, DA MPL Anthony Benadie said on Friday.

He said he would lay charges of incitement to violence against Lamola on Sunday at 09:30, at the Joubert Street police station in Middelburg.

"The recklessness of this statement at a time when a high number of violent crimes are taking place on Mpumalanga farms cannot be tolerated," Benadie said in a statement.

"Mr Lamola obviously wants to carry on where Julius Malema left off. It would do him good to learn his lesson sooner rather than later," said Benadie.

Lamola called for the expropriation of land without compensation at the Durban University of Technology on Tuesday.

An act as forceful as war

"We need an act as forceful as war to bring it [the land] back to the Africans," he said.

The Freedom Front Plus also condemned the remarks, saying they were creating conflict and polarisation in SA.

"The silence of the senior ANC leadership, especially President [Jacob] Zuma, about this is very disconcerting and makes the ANC an accomplice to this incitement to violence," spokesperson Pieter Groenewald said in a statement.

"The farmers have no reason to apologise for possessing their land and have always fed the people of this country."

Groenewald said some communities had resorted to taking the law into their own hands by executing criminals and government should not be surprised if the same happened as a result of farm murders.

The ANCYL is taking its views on land appropriation to the ANC's national policy conference in Midrand next week.

Blood on his hands

Earlier this week, civil rights lobby group AfriForum bemoaned Lamola's remarks.

Deputy CEO Ernst Roets said Lamola had blood on his hands.

"For as long as the ANC watches on while farmers are being killed and hate speech is rampant in its ranks, the ANC, too, has blood on its hands," said Roets.

In a statement on Friday the ANCYL said it was meeting with AfriForum to discuss its stance on land reform.

"The meeting is expected to speak to a future platform for co-existence and sharing of land, underpinned by urgent, decisive, and radical economic transformation, to benefit South Africa's black majority," the ANCYL said.

According to a report, Henry Geldenhuys, deputy president of the Transvaal Agricultural Union, said Lamola was inciting violence.

"There's no option left for the farmers but to prepare for a war."

Hanno van Rensburg, son of murdered farmer Johan van Rensburg, 77, blamed the ANCYL for Wednesday's crime in which his mother Gloudien, 65, was also critically wounded, according to a Beeld newspaper report.

"The ANC Youth League say they want to take our land by violent means and declare war. If they want war, they must come. I'll fucking shoot them. My family's blood has been spilt on this land," Van Rensburg was quoted as saying.

step by step......getting closer to open all-out racial war........thank you ANC

      henk63 - 2012-06-23 08:11

Rupert, this comes as no surprise for the ANC. This has been their silent agenda since it was formed 100 years ago. Talking about the 100 years - that means the ANC was formed BEFORE Apartheid was exercised. Can we therefore deduce that Apartheid was a RESPONSE to the existence of terrorist organizasions like the ANC? Was it not just a matter of keeping your own people safe from the barbarians? The barriers are now removed and our gullible FW & Co handed all the bargaining chips to the enemy. And the enemy they are, judging by current affairs.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-24 02:24

How did all of this happen? The one moment we were at loggerheads over apartheid, the next a gang of has-been communists & revolutionaries languishing in Cuba, Britain & former East European capitals were imported to come and rule us. In one of the most insane moments in history, the former NIS, amid pressure from Britain, decided to resuscitate the ANC from its near-death state and awaken its so-called leaders from their alcoholic torpor in Zambian camps or sleazy state-owned flats in Warsaw or East Berlin. At the time the NP & its intelligence operators had decided to negotiate with, and, as it happened, hand over power on a plate to the most radical foreign exiles and puppets of the communist dictatorships in Eastern Europe, otherwise known as the ANC, who were nothing but a surrogate bunch of failed terrorists subsisting on the sympathy of the former communist regimes in the East. Today we are being fed the propaganda diet of a glorious liberation movement founded in 1912 that won victory in 1994 after years of so-called struggle. This is all historical fantasy, invented retroactively. The organisation founded in 1912 was called the 'South African Native National Congress' and had very little to do with the ANC of today, a new organisation that essentially came about in the early 1990s. The ANC is synonymous with outrage, either through its many half-truths and lies about SA history, or in its appointments of former terror operatives to high government posts.

      Vicker - 2012-06-25 08:32

@henk: This was indeed the case, and Verwoerd even indicated as much. We must never forget that the ANC has been trained by the best propogandists in the old USSR and East Bloc to baffle brains with bullsh1t. @denise - Very interesting information. What are your sources, as it will be rather eye-opening to read more on this. It will also do SA good to know these facts. The time is nigh when the farmers will create their own commandos again, and deal out vigilante justice. Is this what the gumment is hoping for? For when this happens, the gumment will then have an excuse to imprison farmers, leaving their farms open for "nationalisation", or to send in the army to "stabilise" the situation. Of course we can all imagine what the outcome will be of that... Is it all just an elaborate chess game, with Malema and now Lamola being the pawns who are preparing the battlefield by creating incitement and baiting the enemy into reaction, creating a legitimate reason for the knights and rooks to advance and crush the enemy.

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-06-22 17:14

By far the most shocking thing that's been said this year. The YL can criticize a country's government but literally to say war must be used to take land... This is not disciplinary standards, Lamola must go to jail. Farmers don't just own land, they serve this country, without them nothing is possible.

      Its their immaturity levels.

  • Stuart - 2012-06-22 17:16

The few farmers who I have had the privilege of meeting, work really hard to make thier farms a success. The land does not work itself. I don't think the people who want the land clearly know the amount of effort required to make the farm profitable.

Let's hope the meeting between ANC and AFRIFORUM will provide a solution. Those who want war must go elsewhere and fight their war. We cannot jeopardize the future of our children because of the blood hungry short sighted people. Our common enemy is crime and racism. When someone is killed by criminals, racists talk about war against the people who share the same colour with criminals. If we can win a war against crime and racism, South Africa will be a heaven on earth, believe me…

      Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-22 17:46

It will be wonderful if we can the war against crime and racism if not for ourselves but for our children

      msendi - 2012-06-22 18:01

Sooner, this generation will die. As long as we don't leave this nonsense with our children, I will be fine. At least they have a chance to understand each other…

Finally, a sane person has emerged.

      PJP - 2012-06-25 15:45

I can not believe there are those who would put a tumbs down to comments made regarding the ending of war and racicism. Especially when those comments spoke of protecting our children and those coming after us. Clearly these indiduals have not achieved the right to be considered human. They are animals. And what does a human do when an animal attacks?

      PJP - 2012-06-25 15:46

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-06-22 18:06

Moron the ANC is just as guilty since they keep quiet about these idiotic racist comments towards minority groups. This is nothing new, it started with Malema and the ANC kept quiet. Now there is a new creature on a pedestal and the ANC remains quiet, so think before you comment you fool.

Well stated. Problem is that since he is there, we know the ANCYL is Zimbabwean. Easy to see. Now, this creates a bigger problem for us than what we thought. It means that our leadership is becoming Zimbabwean. Which, in the long will cause ALL South Africans to suffer. Imagine Zanu-PF groups plundering our resources and killing our people. They are killing their own in Zimbabwe, imagine what they will do in South Africa. I think NO ONE must be allowed in parliament unless he is native South African. That way we can protect our rights.

What I find funny is that everytime a black person comments that the white people should go back to their country, and white people comment that Zulus or Xhosa (basically anyone who isn't Koi) are not native to South Africa either thus the land doesn't belong to them, those black people have NOTHING to say, no argument or anything to back up their original comment. Silent admission, perhaps? And while we are about it, why must we go back yet Zimbabweans, people from Mozambique, etc (the same people you complain are stealing your jobs) don't have to go back? Double standards? Oh, but white people are the racists. Thank goodness there are plenty of black people who aren't fooled by this madness.

      Dewald Britz - 2012-06-22 17:52

Not sure it's madness, rather extreme arrogance or stupidity, or both.

He is ''diffrent'' like he looks like his from up north, some where really, he eeven look's diffrent, his diffrent. He doesnt act like a South African, Julius Malema was an angry South African you could tell this one is diffrent

      Pro - 2012-06-23 05:33

Lamola is Zimbabwean. It is common knowledge that most of the ANC and ANCYL higher up structures comes from Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe infiltrated us in 2008 when Mbeki was forced to leave the presidency. Zuma and Mugabe is the best of friends. So, soon, we are also going to have "ZANU-PF" death squads roaming the streets, killing black/white/indian/chinese/colored people daily like Zimbabwe. We will have bread prices soar to R100 a bread (or much more), because there is no farmers to produce any products. ONLY if we all vote differently this time, AND DISBAND ZIM GROUPS LIKE THE ANCYL, things will start getting on track.

\An act as forceful as war\ doesn't this perhaps refers to, giving serious attention to expropriation as aggressive as war? *just thinking*

I am not a racist and i dont want to raise any racial matter, but why always this so-called minority runs to court whenever there is an issue between blacks, wen dey took de land 4rm de blacks did dey go to court?hell no, dey took it by force so let allow de same strategy which dey use to be used even today and put the court out of dis coz WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-06-22 20:47

Thank you DA! Not surprizingly the anc is giving their silent concent to this war talk. Bastards! The blood of our farmers stains your hands!

  • angelique.holt1 - 2012-06-22 20:56

This is the 21st century ,how do u intend to feed the millions of poor people in this country if you suddenly fire all the farmers and food prices go thru the roof when you have to import?also if u insite war you get more generations of children who cannot attend school!the only people who benefit from this are people who need large amounts of unskilled labour ,like mines ...the apartheid government needed that too even though the mines were owned in part by Britain.who is trying to nationalize mines?who is trying to destabilize the country?who stands to benifit from the outcome of these actions?eventually land will be reformed.maybe its better if the process is slow then if there are hiccups we can atleast have a stable food source. .more needs to be done about housing people and giving them decent toilets and a good education and good health care. Wealth will follow good foundations.global warming is our greatest threat right now let's rather work on that or many will suffer!bless south africa!

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-22 21:46

They have not thought about that. There are some that believe that the land should be divided up in proportion to the % of the population they represent. Does anyone really think that 90% of land farmed by blacks will provide 90% of SA's food requirements? If so, we are in for a very hungry time. Then where will they turn? Where they turn now. Knocking on the doors of white owned homes asking for food. Because the 5% of land owned by whites will provide sufficient crops for the whites. Let the blacks farm for themselves - then maybe they will learn about hard work and earning their place in society. No more "give me" or "I want".

      sisa.mtwana - 2012-06-22 22:48

Yes we thought about that ,but its (land) still have to be returned .We are going to suffer for few years .Just like a child you have to crowl be walking .So yes we thought about this .

      Irene - 2012-06-23 01:10

Sisa ~ You thought? Please, if I need a brain transplant, can I have yours because it's still fresh and never been used. As new.

      Emily-Jane Elson - 2012-06-23 13:01

Irene, just because it's fresh and unused doesn't mean it works.. If you had thought about it Siswa, why go through all that: hunger, poverty etc for a couple years, say 10-15, just to prove a point which actually has no factual proof? Say you get your land, now you have it. Cool! Do you have the means to farm and make it prosper with? Or did we steal that too? Water, fertilizer, seeds etc. Your next fight: Whites/Boers steal water from Blacks. TAKE IT BACK at all costs! Good thing we come from the sea, the water is ours then!! Can't take that back as you've all said it before.. LOL! You guys are pathetic

  • Meshack - 2012-06-22 21:05

I have often wondered if people really hear themselves while they talk like they would hear someone else talking. Almost every comment here is in defence of the race one belongs to. Everyone gets emotional and logic loses its place in the context of the matter. I stand to be corrected as i did not hear the speech by Ronald but the single line I read in this article that can be associated with incitement of violence is "An act as forceful as war". That made me think Ronald believes there should be an amendment to the current act and it must be as forceful as war. Going through most posts by my fellow white South Africans begs me to believe that the majority of white South Africans have concluded on every black person's capacity to understand meaning and context of things said, that blacks do not possess such intellect to distinguish. It hurts, and that is if I am correct in understanding what has been discussed here.

      clinton.badenhorst - 2012-06-23 20:31

@ Meshack - You seem like a very intelligent black guy and I respect your comments as you do not degrade yourself and steep to the level of most of these commenters. I am a white South African and I do not think that all black people are intellectually challenged so I apologise for the other white folks who makes those derogatory statements. I think the whole issue is that we come from different cultures and have different outlooks on certain situations. EG. Land reform. The whites believe that they have worked hard for what they have and that they never stole anything. The blacks think that they were the original owners of the land and it belongs to them. I fear that we will most probably never find a solution to this problem as our opinions simply differ to much. I just need to ask one question... Did the black people own every single acre of land of South Africa? In the days when Jan van Riebeeck landed here in 1652, I can almost guarantee you that 95% of South Africa's land was uninhibited? So how on earth can the Youth League suggest that all farm lands belong to the blacks?

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-06-24 21:43

From your mouth, to God's ears, Meshack. If you want a refresher, read the FB comments on this article. Most of the radical, hurtful comments made by Black people have been deleted. You are only getting one side of the story. On that note, do you think that the average ANCYL follower understands the subtleties of 'an act as forceful as war' or 'war'?

  • KReddy - 2012-06-22 22:07

The anc only allowed land claims from dispissession from 1913 onwards and closed the claiming in december 1998. They are still busy with that and mr lamolas own bosses must be blamed for endless delays in finalizing those claims but at the same time the anc cannot be judged too harshly as they're honestly trying to solve the land reform cases to avoid Zimbabwes situation from 2001 with their land grabs and total economic crash and burn. Proper talks are needed where land can be shared and skills shared. People say that the land should be forcefully taken and given to ppl without skills and eventually they will learn to farm, yet do they realize once a country slunps it will take decades to pick up again (look at zim). The anc is takining a very cautious road , however, they should eliminate \tendencies\ like the ilk of Lamola who in the nsuing chaos of this so called war, can grab power and line his pocket and make a quick getaway to Miami.

      jb.basson - 2012-07-14 19:32

You are correct about land claims from 1913 but the reason is not as innocent as it seems. The original occupants of the land before 1913 were mainly the San (bushmen) from whom the land was stolen by the ancestors of those claiming today. In addition many of the Kings and chiefs sold their land to the whites for cattle etc which would mean that the ancestors of those white farmers would have legitimate claims today. The dutch who were an extremely religious people and who were the first pioneers had the policy of not taking land but buying it mainly with cattle. The ANC has rewritten the history to suit themselves.

you say bring back the land to the africans , well look @ the land that has already been handed over the trees are gone , th grass land looks barren , there is absolutely no farming or form of agrculture going on and when it doesnt work for you blame it on apartheid , i saw today just how crude and inhumane black people can be , cut the hind leg off of a living cow and leave it on the side of the road to bleed to death,i think what should take plac is goverment should have training on how to farm , and only when that person can show that he can actually manage the land correctly , should he be given the land on a lease, if he does not make the land work accordingly then he should be thrown off , that way we will not end up like another zimbabwe , that has all that fertile land , and no one qualified enough to manage it

I share my tax money every month with you fu*kers, what the fk do you think the farmers have that was stolen from you. Are you going to grow me fresh mushrooms, I will buy it from you if you do. Who is going to grow the mielies, you ? "If you don't share you will be a victam" my god man, maybe work for stuff like we all do. Ag you know what, there is a reason behind the whole K word. Can you handle democracy for the good of all people? Can you run a farm if given the land? The people you fight against have collectivly risen to the occasion of responsiblity. Start with yourself for the legacy of your children and their children. Grow up and put your hands in your own pockets.

Irene, don't call people "boy" - agreed tngulube, but would you, if the shoe was on the other foot? Come now. The nuns and the fathers that worked among communities in Africa were decimated because they upheld the laws of Jesus. They protected communities and were killed and raped for their efforts. They did so much good, even a thousand years of penance will not absolve Africa for their crime against their own and the rest of humanity. Who do you think sold the Slaves to the Arabs, who sold them to the West? YOUR OWN PEOPLE.

its actually pretty funny. to think in 16whatever, that a farmer and his wife, maybe some kids, would go out into an unknown country, STEAL land from the natives. THEN have the BALLS to happely sit there in his house with his wife and kids. nobody els around for miles, except them and the 100's or 1000's of angry natives they just "STOLE" the land from. LOL what are the chances!! haaahahaha! i smell BS. in any case why do the ancyl think they will get any land? respect for elders is high in the black community, is it not? the old folks will get the land lol. this lamola clown is completely out of line and must be expelled from the circus.

  • Erna - 2012-06-23 06:07

I just have one question. What is Lamola et al going to do with the land they want to expropriate? So far most of the land which has been given to the 'previously disadvantaged' people is lying fallow and the people living on it are no better off than their neighbours who have no land. Possessing land does not mean automatic wealth or even the instant alleviation of poverty and hunger. People would be able to sustain themselves and their families by growing vegetables if they were so inclined. But inherent laziness and lack of initiative prevents people from doing this. They forget owning a huge portion of land can be intimidating and absolutely of no use if not worked on.

  • Pro - 2012-06-23 06:28

ANCYL is ZANU-PF. Lamola is an active member of Zanu-PF. Malema/Lamola will be the downfall of our country.

Why cant they focus on what the youth organization is supposed to focus on. And leave our farmers alone. Have they not learned any lesson from our neighbors.
