Johannesburg - Former chairperson of the Centre for Policy Studies and former director of the Helen Suzman Foundation, Professor Lawrence Schlemmer, has died.
The 75-year-old social scientist died at the Medi-Clinic Constantiaberg, Cape Town, after a short illness on Wednesday.
"He will be sorely missed by the policy community in South Africa," Helen Suzman director Francis Antonie said in a statement.
"His keen intelligence, his lively and inventive mind, and his capacity for understanding different viewpoints, were the hallmarks of his style."
Schlemmer was a qualified sociologist who taught at the University of the Witwatersrand and later set up the Centre for Social Development Studies at the University of Natal.
He was a former vice-president of the Human Sciences Research Council and a director at the survey and research company MarkData.
"He will be remembered for his humbleness and his ability to empower individuals at all levels he interacted with," said MarkData managing director Tertia van der Walt.
