Leaders are servants - Buthelezi

Johannesburg - Leaders in South Africa must remember that they are the servants of the people, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said in Vryheid on Sunday.

"The problem with leaders who do not understand servant-leadership, is that they open the way for corruption and abuse of power," the Inkatha Freedom Party stalwart said in a speech prepared for delivery at a service in the St John's Apostolic Church.

"A self-serving attitude and a culture of entitlement seem to have pervaded the ranks of those who are meant to serve," he said.

Buthelezi reminisced about his own calls to leadership, including to the Buthelezi clan, the KwaZulu-Natal government, the ministry of home affairs and as leader of the IFP.

"In all this, and even now, I have known that I am a servant of my people."
