ANC waiting for election date

2014-01-29 08:14

The ANC will not reveal its candidate list for Parliament and the provinces before the election date is announced, the party says.WATCH

Johannesburg - A leaked copy of the ANC's secret election candidates list reveals that President Jacob Zuma and his closest allies dominate the top positions.

The Star on Wednesday published what it said was a leaked copy of the list, which was reportedly confirmed by several sources. It was compiled during the ANC's lekgotla and national list conference over the weekend and Monday.

Zuma topped the list, followed by deputy ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor and Justice Minister Jeff Radebe.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula was sixth on the list, followed by SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, Public Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan came in at number 13, according to The Star.

On Tuesday, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe declined to reveal the party's candidate list until the election date was announced, saying it was preferable to release the list once it was registered with the Independent Electoral Commission.

Mantashe added that compiling the list was a "painstaking exercise".
