Limpopo a collapsed province - DA

2012-06-09 14:26

Johannesburg - Limpopo is a collapsed province, said the Democratic Alliance at its provincial congress on Saturday.

"Limpopo is, by any reasonable definition, a collapsed province," the party's parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said in a speech prepared for delivery.

"There can be no other way to describe its status when the central government assumes many of the province's powers and functions."

Last month, the province's education department was in the news when the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that its failure to provide textbooks to schools violated students' constitutional right to education.

The department was told to devise a catch-up plan to remedy the consequences of its delay in supplying teaching material.

Days later, Anis Karodia, head of the national intervention team in the Limpopo education department, was fired. He had been on the job for three months at the time of his retrenchment.

Education is one of five provincial departments that were placed under administration by the Cabinet in December 2011 following bad governance and financial irregularities.

On Saturday, Mazibuko said that the DA should take inspiration from the "Arab Spring" set of uprisings when it came to Limpopo.

"Let this be the place where the DA 'forced the spring', and turned Limpopo's politics upside down."

We all knew that. The question is what can any one do about it when corrupt leaders are all ways returned to power.(Block for example)

      motlagoilwe.dintoe - 2012-06-09 14:47

Eddy it is realy amazing how SA is run. There is all kind of legislation around corruption and related activities but we do not have qualified and dedicated staff to monitor and control implementation. Worse is this is done deliberately to enrich some individuals.

      Rabble-Rouser - 2012-06-09 14:57

The ANC leadership are feathering their own nests with corruption, cronyism and nepotism. They are only interested in bloating their own bank balances.

  • motlagoilwe.dintoe - 2012-06-09 14:40

So, so true. How does it happen in this era that a Province become bankrupt. Corruptionm corruption and more corruption.

      John - 2012-06-09 15:24

Question is, what will the incumbents do to turn this province around? Do they have a planned programme? Seeing this province is failed, do the people there recognise this, and if they do, do they have sufficient courage to vote for someone else that is more efficient?

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-06-09 14:41

vote DA, the ANC can't govern, Limpopo is a failed province, EC is next. The uneducated, unemployed & poor, listen up....vote the ANC out, they have failed you.

      John - 2012-06-09 15:28

Lesserjam, you racists-troglodyte, if it white people bother you so much, vote for another party you perceive as 'black'. For how much longer are people gonna keep bashing their heads against the wall voting for the same people that keep bankrupt? And if you're an Ancyl follower, they will keep you poor. Can't be so blind as not to see how Malema stole from your party. And the new leader is no better. Again, great that you dislike white people, but it is not white people stealing from the poor there. Hopefully if this helps your two grey cells rub together, it might just be enough friction to make a spark...

      John - 2012-06-09 15:41

Of course you do lesserjam. What I don't understand is how they keep being voted in seeing that the province is failed, seeing that the educational system is in shambles. You and everyone there has a right to choose your leaders like any citizen. What I don't understand is if you are rational, how can you overlook blatant failures and still keep voting the same people in. Now, don't tell me you don't want to vote DA because it's 'white' - we'll get into another debate there. You have other choices in parties that can win votes in a province to run it and try turn things around.

      John - 2012-06-09 15:48

Old government style? Clearly you have intenet - use google. Google is your friend... Do some research and read all articles regarding Malema. Your very government audited him. See all the illegal deals he made. You gonna blame a minority race for that too? Dude, if you believe very lie from your leaders blindly, that's your problem.

      Kwajo.m - 2012-06-09 16:39

      Keep dreaming.

      John - 2012-06-09 16:40

Just the media? C'mon lesserjam. He is under constant investigation and documents go mysteriously missing. Tax man finally got him. You're the intelligent one then, tell me something doesn't stink? Are you also gonna tell me all his tenders were legit? He's being challenged to a lifestyle audit by your friend Zille - she opened her books and said she has nothing to hide. Is Malema as transparent? Use your intelligent powers of deduction. As far as being found guilty by courts, I will just mention these names: schaik, Yengeni - all found guilty yet still enjoying I'll-gotten wealth. Mr Zuma himself used all his power of influence to hide documents. A further move made to introduce an information bill allowing leaders to hide more from the public. Tell me these things are all lies. Our government, you see, is supposed to serve us. To make sure they are serving us, we insist on transparency! Do you deny Limpopo province is bankrupt and under administration? Perhaps I am too trustful of the media? I will concede the media do look for sensationalism, but having said that, if they report something as factual and it is not, then they open themselves to huge litigation. When you read, we all need to apply ourselves and discern the difference between facts DA is the only racially well represented party. I cant help your perceptions being stuck to 'white'. Either way, as I said before, there are other parties whom are ready to take over those municipalities and prove themselves.

      John - 2012-06-09 16:45

and opinion. Try apply yourself lesserjam, and see if mr Malema is as clean as a whistle as you so eagerly believe. As far as your political choice, I respect that as I respect anyone's choice in a party. But don't tell me you don't choose DA because it's 'white'. You say you're educated, then give me substantiated reasons as to what in their politics you disagree with. If you tell me they have stolen, they have brought a municipality to ruin, they have broken promises, we can debate that, and I promise you, I'll respect your opinion even if different. But don't come with emotional BS and tell me because they're 'white'. Then you make me wonder what education you actually received.

      John - 2012-06-09 18:33

You're stuck in the past lesserjam. I didn't buy what the apartheid government fed us then, and I don't buy the bs AnC feeds us now. You seem to be lapping up everything they feeds you just because they helped bring freedom 18 years ago. Racially representative means just that. Every race is represented. I think many educated black people, including truly educated black friends of mine have found comments like yours offensive. They worked their behinds off to get to where they are and earn their positions. Granted, there are companies that window dress, but if you say Ms Mazibuko is ''uneducated' you're grossly misinformed. The folks in parliament are wolves, and a 'window-dresser' would not survive there for 2minutes. She thinks on her toes and speaks with authority and knowledge. If you analyse what she says, everything has reason and substance. Malema was a puppet just like his successor. They talk because the air is cheap and they get a voting mass for the ANC. Malema's god-complex was not an issue for the ANC so long as he got followers. Malema made the mistake to think he was untouchable, and began biting ANC leaders. They took him out, else he would've gone on. They are investigating him, and if his cronies stop getting in the way of justice, and finish him off. He is protected because he is still politically useful to elements in the ANC. As far as SARS go, you're a man on the street like me. Making a mistake on us will just cost us the inconvenience of arguing

      John - 2012-06-09 18:37

with SaRs to sort it. Malema is a public figure with the backing of thugs and plenty with both financial and political influence. You honestly think SARS will stick their heads out to be chopped and claims he owes literally millions if they did not have the backing for it???? That's terribly naive of you. Your R170k owed to SARS compared to literally millions by a public figure is meaningless. Again, power of deduction comes in handy.

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-06-09 14:49

The ANC has failed to govern this country. It is time to give someone else the opportunity There are so many other parties to choose from.

      John - 2012-06-09 15:30

Lesserjam, you're a blind idiot. They keep placing blame along racial lines, and it's your very leaders raping that province. Wake up dude.

      John - 2012-06-09 18:39

I generally do, lesserjam. But this is a public forum. If you say something offensive/inflammatory/naive then accept you will be criticised. If you make unfounded statements, and particularly racist comments as you have, then don't be surprised by the reaction.

      JohanMaree - 2012-06-10 14:08

I really don't understand why the masses would accept what could barely be called a government (when looking at their performance) that constantly fail them, over and over again. Don't they understand that they deserve more? OH, I just figured it out, off course, the masses has never had a government SA deserves. They have no idea how much they are missing/loosing out on. How could they? I guess that's why the DA is spreading fast...people are waking up!

  • Themba - 2012-06-09 14:58

Limpopo was Juliarse's and company's personal bank account. I hope SARS, the Hawk and the Public Protector make him and company account for every cent they have in their names. If they cannot, all their properties, and monies must be declared proceeds of crime and seized by the State

  • robi.robert.963 - 2012-06-09 15:02

It is wonderful to realize how public funds were allocated and spent in Limpopo province. The result is there is more contruction of the roads and building of RDP houses in limpopo more than any province. Is that corruption?. There is also more public private partnership in Limpopo than any other province. My point is are those private companies from limpopo coming from communities or cronies sector. In other words, imagine if those private companies were from communities, communities economies should have been in good standing resulting in reduction in unemployment and underdevelopments from communities. The main problem is politicians and their associates are in charge of those companies benefiting from public sector tenders.

  • anthonie.vanbosch - 2012-06-09 15:20

It may be a good political ploy not to properly educate people to hold on to power. However, a good education and degree does not stop people from ignorance, nepotism, patriotism and greediness. Look at “educated” Europe who are struggling and it seems the RSA will now also be affected by their unwillingness to change. Even some first world countries are not obliged to appoint the best candidate where a position needs to be filled. Humanity needs to get rid of prejudice and discrimination (internationally) and try to save the world by appointing the best candidates. I will not rest my case as this craziness affects us all!

Thank you!! Maybe it will be the minority up raise. I mean if people are fed up with the current government, they will respond swiftly. But be warn, during the pat government black were not counted. And the current opposition had a benefit of being counted. They were free, had Johannesburg's St Mary's School, WaverleyGrey access where fees goes to thousands of rands where the few can afford. , live at liberty while the blacks that they claim to be fighting for struggle day in day out.

@muffin, you have to understand that liso has never had a government that all South Africans deserve, one that actually governs, he/she doesn't have anything to compare the total failure of the ANC to?
