Limpopo appoints acting premier
Polokwane - Limpopo education MEC Dicson Namane Masemola has been appointed acting premier of the province while premier Cassel Mathale recovers from a car crash, his office said on Monday.
"MEC Masemola has been appointed acting premier with effect from now [11:00 Monday]," spokesperson Mashadi Mathosa said.
"Mr Masemola will be the acting premier until Easter Monday [April 9] when Mr Mathale resumes office."
Mathale was involved in a car accident on Thursday.
"The premier is fine and still at home recuperating. He will definitely be back next week," Mathosa said.
Limpopo police were investigating the circumstances under which Mathale's official vehicle left the road and crashed into a small hill before overturning at Ga-Sekgopo village.
Mathale, who was the only passenger, and his driver were admitted to the Medi-Clinic in Polokwane on Thursday.
The driver was discharged later that day. Mathale was discharged on Friday.
Mathosa has declined to give details of "the premier’s minor injuries", but disclosed that the province’s first citizen had some stitches on his right ear.
Masemola, a close ally of Mathale, was also re-elected his deputy in the ANC during the provincial conference in December year after Mathale triumphed over deputy arts and culture minister Joe Phaahla.
Results of the elective conference are still in dispute after Phaahla supporters lodged complaints of election irregularities with the ANC headquarters.
