Johannesburg - SA Medical Association (Sama) chairperson Norman Mabasa has been appointed Limpopo's health MEC, the association said on Friday.

Mabasa had resigned from Sama and would take up his new post with immediate effect, Sama vice chairperson Mark Sonderup said in a statement.

"It was actually a great honour and privilege working with someone of Norman’s stature and humility through the years," he said.

"Under him, the board worked openly and with trust."

Sonderup said Mabasa had played a key role in the medical group's unity process in the late 1990s and became a Sama board member when it transformed from the Medical Association of SA in 1999.

He was elected chairperson in October 2009.

Mabasa also served a term as president of the association and acted as a general manager in 2011 to oversee the organisation’s restructuring process.

Now replace Gauteng MEC of health with a medically trained person. We have to dictate when it comes to our live.
