Madonsela fires back at ANC over criticism

2012-08-11 10:00

Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's attendance at a Women's Day event organised by the DA is part of her constitutional obligation to be accessible to people and communities, her office said on Saturday.

"Attendance of this meeting was in fulfilment of her constitutional obligation of being accessible to all persons and communities as espoused [in] the Constitution," spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said in a statement.

"It was also in pursuit of the public protector responsibilities to be independent, impartial and in exercising her powers without fear, favour or prejudice."

On Friday, the ANC criticised Madonsela for attending a Women's Day event organised by the Democratic Alliance.

"Madonsela's decision to attend a political party rally was ill-considered as it opens up her office to perceptions of political bias," ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga said.

Motshekga said the public protector "rubbed shoulders" with DA leaders at the event. He argued that Madonsela was jeopardising her constitutional role of independence and impartiality.

"Attending and giving keynote addresses at political events of political parties has the potential to compromise these basic constitutional principles," Motshekga said.

However, Masibi said the event was incorporated into the national stakeholder consultative dialogue that Madonsela launched in July which included giving "special interest groups" opportunity to interact with Madonsela.

"The public protector's address focused on the constitutional promise to women and people of South Africa, and ensuring that the mechanisms are in place to assist the people to hold the State accountable," she said.

"The main thrust of the public protector's speech was on [her] role as one of the public accountability institutions... People were given an opportunity to ask questions and lodge complaints... A lot of the complaints related to RDP housing challenges."

People were also encouraged to advise others to lodge RDP and other service delivery complaints, said Masibi.

Motshekga said Madonsela should participate in public outreach such as Women's Day events but should seek an "impartial platform" to do so.

Masibi said that Madonsela does not decline requests by community groups that require her services.

A breath of fresh air... to have fearless Madonsela in that office bodes only good things for SA. I only hope ANC cadre and other minister learn something from her.

      sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-08-11 10:25

The only thing they'll learn is to not put someone with intergrity and a brain in a high ranking position. She has become a HUGE thorn in their side. I really admire her - she has grit, heart, morals, guts, and refuses to be bullied or pushed around. Thuli is my hero!

      arvin.hooseria.9 - 2012-08-11 11:16

Learn? That's a far cry for the cadres. they haven't learnt to steal. if they did, they wouldn't get caught. Thanks to Madam Madonsela.

      alf.pop - 2012-08-11 17:06

Motshekga as the chief whip (or is it Whimp) of the ANC proves every time he opens his mouth that his has very limited knowledge of democratic issues and matters constitutional. The ANC in general struggles to read and understand the constitution. Maybe they should have printed it with pictures! Does anybody know what his academic qualifications are? Or did he get his degrees from the same place bra Blade and Danny Jordaan got theirs? What a wunch of bankers!

This clowns complain about almost everything in life. Not so long ago, they held a secret meeting with Pantsy Tlakula hoping no one will know about it. They think they are the only ones important in this land of our forefathers. Hai, they never fail to amaze.

The self-serving ANC is cross because Thuli Madonsela didn't rub shoulders with them on Women,s Day...as if they have the sole right to Woman's Day.

  • duncan.gill1 - 2012-08-11 10:25

I think the ANC is really really scared, this latest exercise in petty politics seems to bear this out..my my my!

I thought the struggle had something to do with "Freedom of choice?"

      brett.bruce.121 - 2012-08-11 12:19

None of the current crop of crooks were part of any struggle. Other than the struggle to get a good seat on the gravy train.

  • Vince.York - 2012-08-11 10:28

The little gang of somewhat 3500-4500 inner core bitter deeply twisted anc thieves holding SA to ransom cannot afford a single slip from their grip of strangling and asphyxiating absolute power which is now THINLY laced with the "facade of democracy" as it collapses - imploding from excessive ripping the guts of SA out and leaving only racist entrails scattered for the younger hyenas and vultures and jackals. Opposition WORLD WIDE against the racist ANC is picking u at an appreciable rate at last, and soon most of them will be in the international courts for crimes against humanity let alone having to forfeit all the funds they thought they had secured.

Madonsela's 100% correct and Motshekga is... well, he is a Motshekga, after all. Let's say he just lost the textbook.

      sbmafuna - 2012-08-11 11:45

You make me laugh, in Setswana Wa ntshegisa.... you make me to Tshega, that is you make a Motshega..one who laughs. I laugh at other Motshega's ... yet I hold no brief for them. They make us a laughing stock these Motshega's. It's not a laughing matter, and I didn't read this from a textbook. Mine went missing a long time ago; and I'm not laughing.

  • rob.gunning.1 - 2012-08-11 10:35

Well done Thuli. That's how government is meant to act.

      sandra.j.rennie - 2012-08-11 22:04

Thuli can go where she likes ! Since when did Anarchy start in this country ? Who the hell is the ANC to tell her which functions to attend especially on Womans Day. She is her own Woman, and I admire her tremendously. She might work for the ANC but that doesn't mean she has to bow and scrape to their every demand. What about her constitutional rights. She of all people will know about that !

  • themba.thwala.98 - 2012-08-11 10:45

The ANC is used to PPs who are deployed cadres and their lapdogs. That is why they probably regret their decision with Adv Madonsela. She`ll probably not be re~appointed when her second term ends. In the meantime, Bravo! Keep up the good work and dignity of the Office!

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-08-11 11:01

If the anc don't re-employ her....she will not need to worry about getting another job....the people that count have seen her integrity...she will be a much wanted asset in a law firm...and she is clever enough to know that.

      quintin.style - 2012-08-11 15:14

unfortunately mchana they will lay trumped up charges against her,and that way the criminals will get rid of her,god if ever i see a mirror image of ZANU-PF this is it.

  • jomardl - 2012-08-11 10:58

Again, the ANC displays its stunning ignorance of the role of government. All too often the ANC behaves like English soccer hooligans.

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-08-11 11:28

So,, in other words. If you don't vote anc then you amount to nothing in this country??? You don't seem to have a problem taking my money at the end of every month. Bunch of loooosers.

  • justin.hemming.94 - 2012-08-11 11:30

And that is the biggest problem with the ANC! Absolutely no understanding of what a democracy is. Ever heard of the knights of the round table? The government, should be a group of leaders elected from the rainbow of ethnic, religious and politically minded people from all walks of life in our divergent society -elected to sit at a round table to share ideas, and opinions of their particular electorate, and through complex debate, and compromise, find 'solutions', to deal with the vast problems of our society; to stand up as leaders of these broad groups, and through example show morality, acceptance, kindness and an unpretentious desire for reconciliation. Unfortunately, these principles laid down by Mr Nelson Mandela, have since disintegrated - replaced by the cliched 'cadre deployment' - people put into positions to carry forth a skewed political mandate of a selected few, to squeeze out every last drop of gravy, line their pockets, and talk the propaganda talk to the poor and uneducated, thus buying cheap votes (free coloured t-shirts, rather than solid policy and service delivery). The proof is in the pudding people. It's been 20 years, and whilst many rural people may now have water, roads and power, the majority are jobless and live in squaller in the urban sprawl of the big cities, desperate for a job, and a meal - yet unawares that their own people they elected, have sold them down the river for a few bob,and written their fate. It is the African way..a slow doom.

      sandra.j.rennie - 2012-08-12 12:59

They're as thick as bricks !

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-11 11:33

      zama.carter - 2012-08-11 11:37

  • enlightened.bowman - 2012-08-11 12:08

here's the ANC once again, uknowingly exposing itself as a totalitarian Marxist organisation. Madonsela is the PUBLIC protector, not te ANC's shield. I think the biggest worry here is that mrs Madonsela has managed to expose a number of unfortunate incidents and it is worryying the ANC that she might turn on them and tell the country how rottent they really are

  • robqb - 2012-08-11 12:10

Oi, ANC members, it is her constitutional right in a democracy to attend ANY meeting she sees fit to attend. Never heard of "freedom of choice"?

  • el.torro.509 - 2012-08-11 12:16

Her position is PUBLIC protector not ANC protector. Honestly if you don't understand democracy then you shouldn't be able to vote let alone be a politician.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-08-11 12:29

Madonsela unlike, most people in the ANC who are spineless, those with spine are afraid to talk, cause there may never be bread on the table depending on whose bandwagon u spoke for. They just sing at present to impress the master puppet, that is what happens when they just wanna accumulate wealth within a certain 5/10 years time frame. When u put uneducated, spineless people to power u root for corruption, since they got 5/10 to make a lifetime income. Cookie Jar, greed and corruption. Freedom of speech, association are pivotal to the public ptotector.

Well put Public Protector -- you are a shining light in this darkness of decay.

  • walter.tgsa - 2012-08-11 15:37

I would be very surprised if Ms. Madonsela has never attended an event organised by the ANC? She shows guts, I am very impressed by her, hope the ANC won't manage to fire her for some obscure reason. Unlike failed ANC cadres, I guess she would not become an Ambassador...

  • elvis.nkoana - 2012-08-11 16:19

Political party platforms are not neutral platforms. So it follows that, the Public Protector should not create a perception(-emphasis added) of favouritism. This perception, in the eyes of the suppoters and sympathisers of other political parties, can be misinterpreted for biasness and favouritism. Neutral platforms are normally not-for-profit or government organisations etc. However, this is not about ANC or DA but this is about been impartial and Madonsela has failed in this regard. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. You just need a good education.

      maria.roth.589 - 2012-08-11 23:42

No Modikela Nkoana you need to be able to utilize your good education. She is an ANC appointee and needs to demonstrate her impartiality ergo She attends a DA woman's day celebration. Quid pro quo. Or is this beyond your understanding.

  • snethembah - 2012-08-11 16:42

You're certainly not getting away that easy Ms Motshekga!!!
