Magwaza-Msibi introduces NFP to Zulu king

Durban - NFP leader Zanele Magwaza-Msibi on Monday officially introduced her party to King Goodwill Zwelithini in Nongoma.

“Our leader presented our party to the king today. She had a delegation of about 50 people,” said National Freedom Party spokesperson Zanele Cele.

Magwaza-Msibi had wanted to present her party to Zwelithini before the May 18 local government elections but the king was not available, she said.

The NFP was formed in January mainly by former Inkatha Freedom Party leaders who left the IFP following a fall-out over who should lead the party.

The NFP contested the local government elections and won Nongoma and Edumbe municipalities.

It gained four more municipalities after it entered into a coalition with the ANC to form councils in hung municipalities.

Why are they doing this? I just do not get it! Is it because they have won the town where most of the King's palaces are based or are they trying to position themselves as the new IFP which claimed for years to champion the interests of the Zulu people. The danger with ethnic based politics is that it makes a party a regional one and stops it from growing in other areas as the other sectors of the population feel alienated from it. The example in point is the IFP. The IFP positioned itself as the Zulu party, when times were good, Zulus voted en masse for it. However, as soon as the Zulus started dropping it, it could not grow anywhere as it had positioned itself as a Zulu (regional) party and alienated the rest of the population!

Yes. She must also go and introduce the party to all the other Monarchs(Kings) across the republic. Otherwise she risks making it a regional party as KhulekaniDumisa has rightly pointed above. She must learn from all the mistakes of the IFP. Not that her party will ever grow and become a serious national contender, but at least she must try and spread her wings to the nearby provinces. For example, in the EC, the UDM is busy dying its natural death. There are spoils(votes) to be obtained from such disgruntled individuals.
