Malema assets must be frozen, DA urges

2012-10-11 21:27

Johannesburg - Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's assets must be frozen after it was found that he benefited from an unlawful tender, the DA said on Thursday.

"Law enforcement must now take swift action and freeze all of Malema's properties and bank accounts until he can justify how he got this wealth in a court of law," Democratic Alliance Limpopo leader Jacques Smalle said in a statement.

"Malema and his associates must now justify how they amassed their wealth and properties. It cannot be acceptable that they continue to live lavish lifestyles in the face of the damning public protector's findings."

Earlier, provincial spokesperson Desiree van der Walt said Limpopo Economic Development MEC Pinky Kekana must step down, after Public Protector Thuli Madonsela released her report detailing the unlawful tender process between the provincial transport department and On-Point Engineers.

"The MEC clearly cannot be trusted with holding public office any more and must do the honourable thing and resign," she said.

Kekana approved the tender during her tenure as transport MEC. She was appointed as MEC for economic development in March.

Madonsela said on Wednesday the MEC had done so unlawfully.

Van der Walt said Kekana's "wrong-doing" could not be ignored now that she was in a new position.

"After all, the wrong-doings attributed by the public protector to her previous department all happened when she was still at the helm of roads and transport.

"This is a crisp example of a closed, crony system where state tenders are a conduit to enrich political allies," she said.

"We expect MEC Kekana's immediate resignation in light of the findings of the public protector."

The provincial transport department declined to comment on the report on Thursday.

"We will be responding to what the public protector is saying. It is only that at this stage we are not ready, because we have not gone through the report," the department's spokesperson Joshua Kwapa told SAfm.

Madonsela found that the tender was unlawful and that On-Point and Malema benefited improperly from this.

Malema's business partner Lesiba Gwangwa is chief executive of On-Point.

Kwapa said the department only received the protector's report at 18:00 on Wednesday, the same day Madonsela addressed the media on the matter.

"We have to first study the report... when we say we are studying the report, it is seen as a delaying tactic.

"You must remember that we have to come out of this a responsible department, coming up with a statement that will be representative of what we have consumed," said Kwapa.

Madonsela received three complaints in July 2011 and decided to investigate allegations that the department of roads and transport awarded the On-Point tender corruptly.

      heathway.master - 2012-10-11 22:02

Let the law crucify this pompous, great pretender buffoon, and agitator of the people. Malema has become a millionaire without any intelligence and no skills. All he has done to amass all his wealth is to corruptly steal tax payers money. He has not been credited with an honest day’s work in his life, yet he only lives the high life of wealth and privilege.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-10-11 22:04

A bit late I say, he is sly and opportunistic, he has more than likely hidden all his stuff away. He had spun a tangled web, like the other crooks. I doubt that it will unraveled by the okes they set on him. Its all a bunch of hot air.......bleeeh

Ohhh watch the hammer fall! I would love to hear how Julius explains his lavish lifestyle, with cash for cars, farms, that collossum in Sandton and of course his nice watches. Champion of the poor - what a lie! Abuser of the poor more likely. If he lived side by side with the poor and struggled with them I'd be slightly more inclined to believe him!

      beverly.young3 - 2012-10-12 07:24

Oh but he explained it some time ago in the Sunday Times? All donations and people who look after him, if I recall correctly?

My dog is fed twice a day, without paying for it. He can lie down wherever he likes without receiving an account. He spends his days sleeping and will only open his eyes when he smells another free treat approaching, or a bitch is in the area. I really thought about all his priveleges till I realised he is a member of the ANC.

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-10-11 23:38

When DA was found wanting on the communication tender, Zille complained and said Thuli should have consulted her before releasing the findings to the media. For consistency purposes Malema should have been afforded that option. His assets must only be frozen when he is found guilty by the court of law, we are a democracy and we need to be fair and consistant.

      Ze Don - 2012-10-12 08:43

Go do your homework before commenting please. Go read yesterdays article; he was given an opportunity to comment but he chose no to!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-12 14:04

His tender broke nearly every rule in the book, very lttle if any was correct / truthfull. Last time I checked Zille com. tender was not asked to be cancelled, unlike Malema's.

  • Bafana Joseph - 2012-10-11 23:46

  • rouen.heiberg - 2012-10-12 00:26

On a more serious note after my tongue in the cheek previous comment. Malema's whole sham of a life is slowely being picked apart. My gut says we only saw the tip of the iceberg yet. I don't believe he is intelligent enough to have got this far by himself. Would like to see who else's names are mentioned as partners. I don't think he is walking away from this.

  • thulanit3 - 2012-10-12 01:48

Just few weeks ago this malema bragged about being a law-abiding citizen,,,when they seize his ill-gotten asserts,,he will say, it is zuma...!

      Brian Dorning - 2012-10-12 06:17

and if that doesn't work he'll say its apartheid, or the whites!

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-10-12 02:15

And so the saga of the corrupt ANC continues !! Makes me sick to see how they steal taxpayers money with impunity! Zuma you shyster..DO SOMETHING !!

      Erna - 2012-10-12 03:31

Zuma is the biggest thief - he's not going to do anything!

  • Yello Kiya Kamy - 2012-10-12 05:15

received the complaint in 2011, why now ?

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-12 14:11

It took some time to get all the info from all the departments and some people refused to help with the investigation.

  • Asdiedamwalbars - 2012-10-12 05:31

Should Malema not have been long ago behind bars.. if the state knows that they got a good case.. Because he and his partners in crime just keep on hurting the country.

  • Kirston Lyle Noemdoe - 2012-10-12 05:36

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-12 14:16

Sars got a sentence against him of R16m for unpaid taxes etc. It surely is not gone, he is probably looking for a benefactor in Zim or SA or he might be without any property soon.

  • hitting.thefan - 2012-10-12 06:58

So we now know that corruption was perpetrated. So logicly people so go to jail, heads should roll and assets forfated. Let see how much of this will happen, because in S.A. today politicians gets away with murder.

  • Zahir - 2012-10-12 07:14

Malema took millions but does not see it as corruption and fraud the rest of anc elite see our taxes as their money and there is nothing wrong if they get caught

  • Hangwanie - 2012-10-12 07:19

Malema must face the music like others. This will prove if he can stand the test if time. He must just face and be available to prove his innocence if he is.
