Cape Town - It is not xenophobic to point out foreigners’ influence on mining strike negotiations, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said at Parliament.

Mantashe said one could not rule out the possibility of international interests wishing an Arab Spring uprising in South Africa.

“You never rule out economic sabotage. Not everyone is a friend of South Africa,” Mantashe said.

Mantashe said South Africa must be aware of the negative effects of the strike on the country’s economy.

Just after Mantashe’s briefing, Amcu union leader Joseph Mathunjwa took a wage offer from the world's top three platinum producers to striking miners on Thursday but gave no clear recommendation on how to respond.

Around 70 000 miners have been on strike for five months at mines owned by Lonmin, Impala Platinum and Anglo American Platinum, demanding higher wages.

Mantashe warned that foreigners could drag the strike on for 20 years because it doesn’t impact their own lives in the way that it does that of the mineworkers.

The ANC secretary general also said that President Jacob Zuma is resting and that “we want him ready for the State of the Nation” next Tuesday.

Zuma was discharged from a Pretoria hospital on Sunday after spending a night there.
