Manuel warns of purging of leaders

Johannesburg - National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel has
warned against the purging of leaders who have useful skills for the party, it
was reported on Friday.
"The tradition that the ANC should draw on the skills
and acumen of the brightest and best among us is an approach that should be
sought out again," Manuel told The Star Africa.
"To contribute, an individual does not necessarily have
to be in the top six, but the ANC should not eject skills from the leadership
cadre," he said.
Manuel's comments come ahead of the party's national
elective conference which starts in Mangaung, in the Free State, on Sunday.
The party is expected to vote on slates of candidates headed
by either President Jacob Zuma or Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.
Manuel said the contrast between the two was not on policy,
but personality.
"I do not see the difference between various slates as
representing diametrically opposed policy platforms. In point of fact, there
appears to be little that separates slates on a policy basis, so we are down to
personalities, essentially," Manuel said.
