Mashatile denies Mokonyane plot
Johannesburg - There was no plan to unseat Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Paul Mashatile said on Sunday.
Opening the Gauteng ANC's general council in Johannesburg, Mashatile said members were free to lobby for their preferred candidate to take office in the provincial executive committee, as long as they followed ANC guidelines.
He denied that there was a plan to remove Mokonyane from her position as Gauteng premier - a post he held at one time.
"There are rumours in newspapers that there's a plan to unseat the premier. As far as we are concerned as the PEC (provincial executive committee), there is no such (plan)," he said.
"When you are deployed, you are deployed to do your work and do it properly," he told ANC members.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe was expected to address the conference later.
Mashatile is currently ANC Gauteng chairperson, Mokonyane is his deputy.
