Matthews Phosa calls for SA discipline
Johannesburg - Discipline, in both the private and political realm, was needed to take South Africa forward, ANC treasurer general Mathews Phosa said on Saturday.
"In South Africa today we need discipline, cohesion and unity of vision by the leaders of our nation on priority matters that can either take us forward with speed or derail us," he said in a speech prepared for delivery in Attridgeville, Pretoria.
Phosa was speaking at the funeral of Mpumalanga ANC activist Dr Nkate Philemon Thabo Mamoepa who died on Monday after a long illness.
Phosa said the 100-year-old ANC had achieved its political goal by gaining power, but needed to ensure that economic liberation followed political liberation.
He said economic freedom needed to be urgently addressed through the creation of jobs and opportunities for entrepreneurs. In addition, the small business sector needed to be liberalised and a broader model of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment needed to be developed.
Phosa called for better skills and education for all, and "the creation of hope in our future".
