Media still wants to meet Zuma

Johannesburg - Several media bodies still want to meet with President Jacob Zuma to discuss media freedom issues, the National Press Club said on Saturday.

Chairperson Yusuf Abramjee said the meeting will address the recent "bad treatment" of a journalist by the ANC Youth League president, Julius Malema.

He said last month, a number of media organisations, political journalists and media bodies met in Sandton to discuss Malema's relationship with the media.

The meeting resolved to request a meeting with Zuma, as a leader of the ANC.

"Our request was submitted and the Presidency indicated at the time that a date would be finalised," said Abramjee, who convened the Sandton meeting.

He said Zuma hosted some editors in Pretoria on Friday and a request was made for him to meet with a delegation from various media bodies.

"I repeated our request for a separate meeting with President Zuma with a delegation from various media bodies. I am now waiting for a date from the Presidency," Abramjee said.

The idea is also to discuss general communication issues, he said.
