Johannesburg - Former Higher Education director general Mary Metcalfe has been appointed to evaluate textbook deliveries to schools Limpopo, the provincial basic education department said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Panyaza Lesufi said the department had been concerned over reports that some schools were still missing books.

"Therefore the department of basic education would like to announce that Ms Mary Metcalfe has been appointed to assist with the verification of the information that the department has with regard to the distribution of these learning materials to learners in grades one, two, three and 10 in Limpopo," said Lesufi.

Some pupils have been without textbooks for the past six months after the department failed to procure books on time.

The SA principals association reported this week that schools in Limpopo had received textbooks by Thursday but not the required amounts or specified books.

Civil rights organisation Section 27 which had won a court order forcing the department to deliver the books was concerned about the reports of shortages after delivery was supposed to have been made.

The department and Section 27 agreed to appoint an independent person to verify all claims.

Lesufi said the department had also set up a call centre to enable the public to report cases in which schools had not received books.
