'Ministry for minority affairs' laughed off

2012-07-04 19:30

Johannesburg - Freedom Front Plus chief whip Corne Mulder elicited peels of unbelieving laughter from delegates at government’s social cohesion summit in Soweto when he suggested that a ministry for minority affairs be established.

Mulder told the more than 1 000 delegates gathered in a marquee in Kliptown on Wednesday that South Africa needed “a dedicated department for minorities” to “help foster a sense of belonging and decrease the sense of alienation”.

He said government needed to foster a country where “no one feels alienated from their country”.

Mulder also criticised President Jacob Zuma’s suggestion in his opening speech that nation-building was at a high point after the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

“We can’t stumble from one sporting moment to the next without creating a cohesive society,” he said, referring to moments like the 1995 Rugby World Cup and South Africa’s Olympic host bid.

“Every time we have a moment of pride but every time it sinks in the sand. It never lasts.”

He said this was why it was so easy for expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema as well as the controversy around The Spear painting, to polarise South Africans.

      Mondli - 2012-07-05 09:03

We can not be a country that condones segragation of any form. BEE/AA were put to redress the inequalities of the past. Question is have they worked? Are they still relevant? Even the ANC has admitted they need to relook at the policy. You cannot build social cohesion by making one society feel different to the other. We cannot hide behind apartheid in as much as we cannot hide the fact it's effects are still prevalent in many communities. But why are they still so prevalent and what needs to change should be the questions? We need RELEVANT structures and policies to move SA forward, not political bull crap the ANC & it's opposition are feeding us that further promotes solical & racial segregation we do not want nor need! Look no further than this News24 platform to see how some South Africans are still segregated in terms of social & racial cohesion

off topic, i say employers should start a union, if we are unhappy with our workers and their striking, we go on strike, close up shop, no work no pay, and we picket inside our premisis facing outwards. by law im sure we can do such a thing if approached carefully.

Says a lot about delegates' enthusiasm for social cohension if they can't empathise with minority groups. It's also says a lot about their personal character as people.

"In July 2010, President Zuma approved five of the seven kingships and their kings were confirmed by the commission, while the remaining two were still awaiting the commission's recommendation on the rightful incumbent for the position of king or queen" Why can't we have a minority ministry then? We already have a Dept of Traditional Affairs.. thats ridiculous on its own.

Minority affairs. The name says it all, Salee. Under 16's.

      Sharmay - 2012-07-04 21:25

Provide a legitimate mouthpiece for minorities in parliament. One that doesn't get jeered at because it doesn't prescribe to the majority's opinion. Even Whites have a place in the new SA. It would seem that most of these people downing Mulder's idea think that only Whites are a minority. What about Coloured, Asian, Indian and Khoi-San etc South Africans? Don't they also count?

So a guy makes a serious suggestion at this indaba to foster social cohesion and the responese is laughter and jeers. No hope for this summit, never was and this proves it. I hold no flag for Mulder and the Freedom Front+, but the response is pathetic. If you disagree, put forward your arguments against, or don't you have any?

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-04 21:18

What is meant by "majority" and "minority"? ( Please reply without using the words "white" or "black" or "political" or "culture" or "religion" ) The person with the most credible answer will be in the minority, and can go home earlier. If nobody replies, then everybody is in the majority and everybody stays after school to try to figure this out.

      azande.futhi - 2012-07-04 21:47

Majority is the group that voted for ANC. Clear?

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-04 21:56

Excellent reply Alvin. You may go. Collect your knife and your weed at the principal's office before you go. Azande: Expand on the concept of "group". Come to the front. Lead the brain storm. I am just going to see that cute teacher down the corridor. Make as much noise as possible. No. There are no books for you to look up in.

      azande.futhi - 2012-07-04 22:01

@maserati, what is it that you failing to comprehend from my simple definition. Or you are just too obsessed with hearing race and stuff for something to make sense?

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-04 22:20

azande : Looks like you want to keep the class here till midnight. All I asked you to do, is to explain what you mean by "group" . What are the identifying features, how can you define it, is it a subset of another, is it a constant or a variable etc... I asked you to involve the rest of the class in this brain storm while I went on to do some important research of my own. And all you can come up with is something about an obsession with race?? This is really disappointing. I will now go see the other little one down the other side of the corridor. You'd better have something more substantial and credible when I come back. I mean when I return.

      ThinkingChick - 2012-07-05 09:05

A minority in this country is not just about race. Sure that's a part, but also included under minorities would be homosexuals, fringe religions, atheists, foreigners and anyone else who is not one of the sheep.

      ThinkingChick - 2012-07-05 09:09

I am going to keep repeating this until someone understands - minorities in this country are not only identifiable by colour - take homosexuals, for example. Now that is a victimised minority, as are whites, coloured, foreigners and anyone who is not a sheep.

  • ThinkingChick - 2012-07-05 09:01

If a ministry for minorities served minority races, ethnicity, religions, atheists and sexuality then I would be all behind it. This country is splintered in so many ways - corrective rape, an ANC that believes it is the party of god, hatred of minority races emerging - from straightforward fear of foreigners to a general hatred of whites (also encouraged by the ANC). I fail to see why protecting minorities would be a bad thing.

  • Allan - 2012-07-05 09:26

In every country in the world groupings feel that they are superior or not as good as another group for which ever reason. The socialist ANC is trying to sell to its members that we are all equal and with it the ENTITLEMENT to an equal share of everything which not a realistic expectation. This has not and does not work in any country on the planet how do we expect it to work here? Social cohesion is a human right to associate with whom ever you would like to and in the same way not to associate with. It is not up to the state to force any group into a social cohesion with another group as the ANC has tried to do through BEE/AA legislation.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-07-05 09:37

I agree, as it stands the minority has been muted. Government does not know how we feel, what we can offer or anything, because it really does'nt care. It is high time that we do have a voice, the minorty have a lot to offer, we can help government improve we can help uplift the poor in ways that the poor can help themselves instead of relying on government handouts. It is time government started to recognise that they need to shape up, they have failed badly on all fronts. Its time for them to take stock and work with the people. Blacks and Indians and coloureds have had 18 yrs to uplift themselves. There are a lot of black people and indians are the main people that have taken the opportunity to uplift themselves. Coloureds again I believe although given the chance have been sidelined with the white people. At the moment there is nobody to speak for the minority and so therefore I believe at this stage we need to have a representative who will work with government and therefore be our voice and hopefully it may be heard. After 18 years I think its time for government to stop their arrogance and come to the table. As South Africans we deserve a better life for all irrespecive of colour. We work and live side by side, its government that is hampering the problem because the people have now seen how they operate and their shortfalls, maladministration fraud corruption and maladministration. They are trying to cover up their devious actions, blaming apartheid.

  • Dennis - 2012-07-05 10:47

Are minorities and majorities defined by race? If so, what about a black homosexual, or a white transgender atheist? What a white anc supporter or a black guy who identifies more with white/asian people, indian christian, white muslim or a colored wicken ? Chinese/oriental people are economically black so how about them?

      LanfearM - 2012-07-06 13:25

Exactly bashin.monyela! I so agree with your comment! We should stop thinking along racial lines in this country! It is the only way we will ever go forward and all prosper.

  • Pixie86 - 2012-07-06 06:07

Are you kidding me? The minority in this country alienate themselves! They don't want to integrate. They still believe they're superior and are always insulting to the majority calling them breeders, stupid and uneducated. Send a white man to the township and just see what a warm welcome he'll get. Didn't you see that when the rugby was played in soweto?

      LanfearM - 2012-07-06 13:24

Well yes. Then why haven't they organised other rugby games at Orlando stadium etc. again? I thought it was brilliant the times they did, but after the soccer world cup it never happened again. What a pity. A great opportunity has been lost. There are also more than one minority in this country! Not all of the minorities are white. There is an Indian minority, a Coloured minority, an Asian minority. All three of these are quite substantial and for some reason people always forget about them and only harp on about black and white. And Pixie86, not all of the white [or other] minorities talk or feel that way about the majority. Stop generalising.

  • mokgadi.deborah - 2012-07-06 06:49

Is this a joke or what? We will only think about that kind of ministry as soon rich and poor people, black and white can stay together in townships and surbubs as South Africans. The goverment should refrain from selling land to developers and only sell a portion of it. The rest should be given to the majority who have been forcefully removed from their land and dumped in the towships. Then minorities will understand equality.

      LanfearM - 2012-07-06 13:21

Firstly, we already to live together in the suburbs at least. I have more than one black African neighbour. Secondly, I agree with you about government and land. They should distribute some of the more than 30 million hectres of land they have to those that don't have land.

  • nav.chan.5 - 2012-07-06 15:35

Hmmm ... a "Ministry for Minority Affairs". That would be "Whites Only"? Come on, even in the vestiges of desperation, surely, anyone with ANY common sense, would realize that this is another attention grabbing headliner to add some sort of credence to fringe parties. Not that I agree with the ANC in its present incarnation, but it's not like they rounded up the Apartheid followers and gassed them. There has to be some sort of prevailing sense of pragmatism from all ends of political control and oversight.
