Johannesburg - North West premier Thandi Modise has instructed the provincial local government department to investigate whether spending R2.4m on a local soccer tournament is justified.

She had asked for an urgent investigation into money earmarked for the Matlosana local municipality's mayoral soccer challenge, she said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Expenditure towards the venture should be measured against service delivery challenges facing communities and whether the municipality, which was unable to meet its financial obligations a few months ago, can now afford to host the challenge without sponsorship," she said.

She said the municipality was planning to host the tournament, which involved Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtics, Platinum Stars, and Super Sport United on 28 July.

It would cost R2.4m to host, while bringing in an expected income of only R192 000. Each participating team was reportedly expecting to be paid an appearance fee of R300 000.

She said Matlosana was one of the municipalities in the province earmarked for support by the intervention team deployed by Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu to improve the state of ailing municipalities.
