Molewa mum on hotel stays

2011-09-06 16:49

Cape Town - Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has declined to give detail on costs of the guesthouses and hotels she and her deputy have stayed at in the past two years.

"I am not able to answer this question as it deals with matters that may negatively impact on my personal security and operations of the department," she said in a parliamentary reply tabled on Tuesday.

Democratic Alliance MP David Maynier asked her to say how many international and domestic hotels and guesthouses she and Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi had stayed at since April 1 2009.

Among other things, he wanted to know the star rating of these establishments, their location, the purpose of the ministers' stays, and the individual and total costs of the accommodation.

That's BS! I'm guessing the bill will be disgusting!!!! She would have to resign and flee the country (,because of the mob after her)

  • falcon2020 - 2011-09-06 17:06

I don't mind if she stayed in good hotels, but what has she delivered from her portfolio to justify the cost - jip a big nothing...our rivers are dying a slow poluted death...

How can a government official refuse to give detail. It is not her money, it is taxpayers money and everybody is entitled to know the expenditure of government (taxpayers) money. Then we have protesters burning Zuma flags - do they have any idea that it is not about Zuma and what he does. He receives mandate (by voting for the ANC) from the people to do what he does. It does not help getting rid of a president - it is the party which is the problem. Here we have money again going where it should not go and nobody taking accountability - but our people will carry on voting for the ANC. INSANITY is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

      Bafo - 2011-09-06 17:19

      Very true!

      tryanything - 2011-09-06 18:00

  • Ldn_saffa - 2011-09-06 17:10

Not sure why he bothers asking as she will either continuously evade the requests or just lie about it. Just look at the poor excuse she's using! Since when does listing expenses impact on personal security?? hmmm....unless she's been stealing!

      Bafo - 2011-09-06 17:20

We, the public and voters must be stupid!

      POLLENYS - 2011-09-06 18:03

Her security? Won't recognise her is she sits next to me in the bus. She creates her own risk by surrounding herself with an entourage of useless cadres that makes her stand out.

  • Louwhan H - 2011-09-06 17:15

Day after day this kind of crap is spewed in our faces, day after day the South Africans who physically pay for thiss fiasco moan and bitch about it in vain, the ones that have f..all even throw the occasional stone or burn a few free T-Shirts. My question is this. When will the glass be full - better - spill over??? When will there be a collective resistance? The rich are not happy, the poor are not happy and the middle class is being squized so hard it seems that they have almost no feelings left. I guess I canĀ“t declare a war but I am sue ass hell willing to fight one when the time comes.

      Dazbo - 2011-09-06 18:04

Well said !!! I echo those sentiments exactly...Everyone bitches and whinges but will not stand together and demand action...or in this case, answers. How, in God's name, can an elected representive refuse to disclose details of where he/she has spent tax payers money. People have a right to know and should demand that the information is made public. For F*ck sake is this a joke ??? I'm stunned that she is allowed to refuse a direct request for information !!!

  • Gambino - 2011-09-06 17:17

Another one thinking tax payer's money and monopoly money is the same.... they have no respect or shame...

  • tailormade - 2011-09-06 17:21

Did I read this correctly: The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs? Jip, I did read correctly... Wow, I didn't know that that particular portfolio had troubles with security issues.... What an absolute joke. It just sounds like the "usual" convenient excuse not to answer any questions in parliament.

      Christelle - 2011-09-06 17:23

Of course there are security issues - imagine the Groot Krokkidil finding out where stayed:-)

      falcon2020 - 2011-09-06 17:29

You will be sickened by the magnitude and antoerage (sic) these minister travel with..., she is probably more under threat than Kortbroek - he just chased us of the beatch-- this girl is gonna make us die of thirst

      eKnows - 2011-09-06 17:49

What does she actually look like? Amazing how they have bodyguards etc and then we don't even know who they are suppose to be. "Al dra 'n aap 'n gou ring ...."

  • Slapper - 2011-09-06 17:28

How does her past stay's be a danger to her future? Does she think that here enemies have a time travel machine? Nail the Bitch.

  • DarkB4Dawn - 2011-09-06 18:11

You can hate the UK all you like, but at least they clamp down on corruption. Before you start spouting your racist comments, note the colour of the MP's skin in this article: Corruption has nothing to do with being black.

  • Dog!! - 2011-09-06 18:19

I will tell you the security issue!! She is to sh@t scared to drink our own brewed tap water because her Department does not maintain quality water to the general public. The security guard has to drink the water first and then gets monitored very closely. My conclusion she is right!!Her longevity is a security issue!!

  • William - 2011-09-06 18:25

  • semaj - 2011-09-06 18:32

Ducking and diving. Typical. Then hiding behind security issues. Who would be interested in knowing where she was and when in order to find her there again? Arrogance de-luxe. I am not to be held accountable is the message that comes through, my position requires high security. What utter garbage. We do need to know how much of our tax has been squandered.

  • hafezhamza - 2011-09-06 19:57

its not fair that gov. officials use the public's money for their own luxury.its totally wrong.

  • Vince York - 2011-09-06 20:40

WHY IS THIS MINISTER SO THREATENED? (A civil servant that is) It is simple questions needing transparent answers to the citizens of South Africa and does not involve any state secrets or endanger her of the nation!

  • Douglas Hendry - 2011-09-07 07:04

What a load of codswallop. She is embarrassed to reveal where the money has gone, and she should be forced to reveal this info. Hiding behind such weak excuses , from an elected politician, is appalling

  • ian b - 2011-09-07 07:11

"Working together we can steal more"

  • Sisie - 2011-09-07 07:43

"it will impact negatively on my personal security" - umm these are places you have stayed in - not the ones in future. More than likely impact negatively on my job - hell it's not every day the nanny can stay in 5* hotels, and now that she can you better believe that she will milk the system for all it's worth. Besides all those years she spent in training should now pay off - don't you think. Never said she had to work for it.

  • Happygas - 2011-09-08 21:51

seams like these ministers live in fear

  • archiebald - 2011-10-12 09:38

She wont be able to fill her census form,it has 78 questions ,she cant answer one.Where is she living right now?Hello! you are employed by the people(voters)You are paid an exorbitant salary (from taxpayers contributions)The only way this will be stopped is for us citizens to abide by Mandelas vision of a united citizenry, currently this means vote for the opposition,Come on people current ANC is rotten to the core.If we want a better life vote against ANC,commies, cosatu. They have not delivered any thing except promises and corruption and job losses

  • MIM128 - 2011-10-12 09:42

Maybe people who dont have clean running water want to kill her!!! I bet these Ministers (sorry about the capital"M") would never use their own money to stay and travel in such luxuries. Remember she was a teller supervisor at Checkers and its her time to enjoy now...Ironically, another story says three towns in Mpumalanga have no water!
