Motlanthe to address ANCYL

Midrand - ANC Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is expected to address the ANC Youth League's national general council on Friday, its final day.

The conference has been plagued by delays since it started on Wednesday.

Delegates sang in support of ANCYL president Julius Malema, Deputy Police Minister and former ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula and Motlanthe as they filed into the conference hall, in Midrand, shortly after 09:00 on Friday.

The ANCYL wants Mbalula to replace ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe at the party's next leadership election in 2012.

Most of the delegates wore ANCYL waistcoats, yellow T-shirts and ANCYL camouflage caps.

On Thursday, a motion of no confidence was proposed in ANCYL deputy president Andile Lungisa. Malema declined to provide the reasons for the motion. A decision on Lungisa's position was expected on Friday.

Lungisa was in the running to challenge Malema for the presidency at the ANCYL elective conference in 2011.

Resolutions expected to be tabled before the conference closes include the ANCYL's endorsement of the nationalisation of the mines and its plan to have a broader "generational mix" in the ANC leadership.
