Mulder blows R500 000 on flights

2012-08-01 14:31

Johannesburg - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Deputy Minister Pieter Mulder spent nearly R500 000 on domestic and international flights between his appointment in 2009 and March last year.

Mulder’s boss, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, revealed that the Freedom Front Plus leader spent R472 595 on about 80 flights between May 2009 and March last year.

Joemat-Pettersson was replying to a parliamentary question from DA MP Pieter van Dalen.

Mulder also received subsistence and travel payments and reimbursements for expenses incurred totalling more than R12 000 for international travel in the 2010/11 financial year.

Joemat-Pettersson is the subject of investigations by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela for spending R1.6m on six chartered flights over 18 months.

The complaints were laid by Congress of the People MP Deidre Carter and the DA’s Lourie Bosman, who complained about Joemat-Pettersson’s expensive luxury hotel stays.

Mulder’s spokesperson, Wouter Wessels, said the deputy minister’s travelling was the price the country had to pay for having Parliament in Cape Town while Pretoria is the capital.

“We try our utmost to save taxpayers’ money but are obligated to make use of a specific travel agent contracted by the department,” Wessels said.

He said Mulder’s travel expenses were similar to those incurred by an MP, whose travelling costs taxpayers R480 000 a year.

This guy needs some catching up to do--he doesn't understand the gravy train---spending only R137 th per year on overseas flights and R30 th per year on domestic flights.? Has he also got a R100th per month tax free credit card facility? If he hasn't he is a real loser.

  • Sandy - 2012-08-01 14:45

R500,000 for 80+ flights compared to R1.6M on 6 flights - ermmmm forgive me but I fail to see the link - methinks that Joemat-Pettersson is trying to blow some smoke in someone elses direction.

      mike.v.niekerk - 2012-08-01 14:58

80 flights @ R 500 k = avg R 6 250 per flight 6 flights @ 1 600 k = avg R 267 000 per flight = 42 times more per flight He's obviously not flying kulula / mango / 1time, but he is definitely not flying chartered. If Joemat-Pettersson was flying what Mulder flew, the cost would have been R37500, saving R1.55 mil for, uhm, books, clothes, work, schools, housing.

      eil33nn - 2012-08-01 15:05

@mike, it seems as though he is flying cattle class for international flights and this is almost a 4 year stretch...agreed, what is the issue here?

      schmee.gol - 2012-08-01 15:06

Oh noooooo we can't spend money on books, schools or providing running water to poor people. What a waste!!! At least that is unfortunately what the majority of MP think but don't say. However compared to the waste of money in other government departments, I don't understand what the fuss about Mulders expenditure is.

  • goodguy.buthelezi - 2012-08-01 14:47

Where is this world going people?Mulder spending tax payers money like this, ANC corrupt as usual, DA accepting bribe from the GUTPTAS.. I dont know man but this is scary man, really scary!

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-08-01 14:51

Seems like everybody is in it for themselves nowadays and don't care for the people of the country. I beg to differ with the DA though... They seem to be the only party that is looking out for the people!

      Squeegee - 2012-08-01 15:08

Michael, don't put your hope in politicians. At best we much choose the lesser of evils, but people get into politics for power and money and when they are in a position to abuse they usually do. Sad but true. So, lets vote DA, but don't expect utopia.

      avuyile.mali.7 - 2012-08-01 15:09

The DA is just capitalizing on prevailing ANC weaknesses... And they also do show the capability of corruption, but at the rate the ANC is going, it is close to impossible to nail any other party practising corruption.... God for South African governance... Zuma fails, Zille can fail, Cope Failed, IFP Dying, UDM Dead, PAC Died.... GOD from everlasting to everlasting

      wim.kotze.9 - 2012-08-01 19:55

Yes , the DA's Manie Langpad pocketed R275,000 in one year, because the clod travelled by road "looking out for the people", with the party's blessings. How blind can one be!

  • jocelia.petrick - 2012-08-01 14:55

Compare to what the ANC member blew - it is small change!!

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-01 16:37

@ azande - Absolutely not okay. Overspend is overspend and this was actually in 2 years not 3 as some posters are claiming. 2009 - 2011. Sure it's a drop in the hat compared to Joemat-Petterson but I still don't get why he has to fly so much as he is in opposition not ruling party.

      wim.kotze.9 - 2012-08-01 19:59

Nee Margie, daardie hoek is bespreek vir Manie Langpad, dws. as die DA ooit beoefen wat hulle predik.

  • gladstone.dyonase - 2012-08-01 15:00

I'm not his fan but honestly speaking, that R500000 is nothing compared to how much of our tax money the ministers are spending for fun. Mulder used that money for his jobs purpose, and it's a cent.

      azande.futhi - 2012-08-01 15:34

      are you sure?

  • eva.walle.75 - 2012-08-01 15:03

Who the hell gave politicians the right to spend as they please?

  • Citroes - 2012-08-01 15:05

R500k on about 80 flights? Thats an average of almost R6k per flight. I can fly from Joburg to CT and back for under R2k. So Pietertjie flies business class because someone of his stature cannot possibly save money and fly Mango/1 Time/Kulula cattle class. Absurd waste of money. These people should all go to jail and be made to refund the money. Including that useless Joemat Pietersen.

      walter.tgsa - 2012-08-01 15:26

I am sure Mr. Mulder also travelled overseas, like Tina...

  • walter.tgsa - 2012-08-01 15:08

Personally, I do not see much of a problem. R500,000 over a three year period does not seem THAT excessive. Tina's flights however over an only 18 months period seem rather rich(R1.6Mio, 6 charter flights, and I am sure there are tons of other flights too)!

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-01 16:42

The time period for Pieter is two years not three but I agree with you on Tina's trips.

  • gareth.haden - 2012-08-01 15:09

Everyone's missing the other problem.... “We try our utmost to save taxpayers’ money but are obligated to make use of a specific travel agent contracted by the department.” Who might that be and who's benefiting?

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-01 16:43

Precisely! Is it the same agency which was involved in Travelgate or maybe a pal?

      bernard.ingram - 2012-08-01 17:37

Totally correct Gareth. Beautiful BEE at work. Time to scrap it.

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-03 10:23

Yep I spotted that too and my first thought was who owns this travel agency?

  • venus.sharma.5205 - 2012-08-01 15:11

For as long he is doing government duties who cares?how much is zille spending on domestic flights only as she has no business internationally?

  • phumi.ntlabati - 2012-08-01 15:17

We should all place the blame at the door of the DA. They are the ones who are refusing to relocate parliament to Pretoria!

  • goodguy.buthelezi - 2012-08-01 15:18

I read that some people are saying the money that Mulder spent is nothing compared to the amount that ANC spends. Are you guys justifying Mr Mulders action because he belongs to your race? Corruption is corruption FINISH AND KLAAR! If its a black person that eats money THERE IS AN OUTCRY if its a White person PEOPLE JUSTIFY THE WHITE PERSONS ACTIONS! NOT ON!

      louis.hager.12 - 2012-08-01 15:40

Just explain, how it is officially corruption? R500 000 since 2009 estimates to a reasonable amount, BUT if it was R500 000 in UNCLAIMED claims and expenses, then it qualifies as corruption.

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-08-01 15:40

Actually what people are saying is that the money he spent was not excessive! R6 k per flight including international flights is not excessive at all over a 3 year period. I'm not white, just being objective. However if Zuma got his way, he would have procured a R2 bn luxury aircraft by now. Irrespective of race, that is excessive when placed into context. It is amazing how people who cry racism demonstrate racism themselves.

      walter.tgsa - 2012-08-01 15:42

And everything is always 'racial', just another pathetic comment. I have just read all the comments again, the 'ANC' hasn't come up much but the travel cost of Ms. Tina have. So, what's your point again? I understand that Ministers do have to travel but R500,000 over a three year period really is not much. I guess you are not familiar how much is spent by senior company executives annually for travel (they have to travel too or 'business' ain't working well, I suppose!)? I think the point here is: Why do Ministers have to use private or charter planes? I am quite happy they fly business class (travelling is not much fun, you know!) but why can't they do it on SAA? Yes, I know they do not like the service, neither do I!

  • busicor.nel - 2012-08-01 15:19

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-08-01 15:20

Not too bad for a deputy minister as he spent the same amount on flights in 2 years what most MP's spend for a year. Probably took a "flossie" to cross the ocean?

      sello.molekwa.1 - 2012-08-01 15:29

I doubt you would have said the same if the Deputy Minister had a Sotho name and a dark skin.

      wim.kotze.9 - 2012-08-01 20:07

No Sello, if it was a black Minister he would have been applauded.

      gert.swart.393 - 2012-11-17 15:00

@sello: A Sotho name could have caused a problem and maybe also a dark skin. But a Zulu or Xhosa name would have been fine. We would also prefer a very dark skin in stead of just a dark skin, or maybe a light dark skin, like Mandela's.

It is happening in all governement departments. The managers are using trips to stay in hotels, feed their faces and then they return to claim some allowances. I work in such a department and see it all the time. They actually sit in their offices on a daily basis scanning the internet to seek out opportunities for meeting or to attend some unnecessary seminars especially overseas as the allowances are much more for that.

I wonder how hard Tina screwed up this time, to have to resort to such petty SPIN. Dr Mulder probably had to fly so much to go and settle tensions where the \honorable\ Tina Joemat-( Knows NOTHING about agriculture, fisheries and forestry, other than it's her job title) -Pieterson buggered up sound and solid relations with the sector.

      bibi.shakwane - 2012-08-01 18:33

But, if government officials fly economy class - or whatever cheap flights are called these days - and reside in cheap motels/BnBs wont they and their important documents be vulnerble? Not to mention long queues and such? Or is it not what these guys want? And, no, I in no way condone (over-indulgent) spending of public funds more than is necessary. But, how much IS 'necessary' really?

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-01 16:26

As an opposition leader does he pay for those flights from the salary he receives for being in Parliament or is the State paying for these flights or in other words, over and above what he earns as an MP is he also spending this amount on flights? Someone has commented that as a one man import export business he spends this amount however what he spends comes from his own pocket and not that of the State. If I am incorrect on this I apologise, I just do not understand why Pieter Mulder is able to claim allowances and have R500,000 worth of flights per year at the taxpayers expense. He is NOT the President or even leader of the largest Opposition Party so why is he spending this much? We complain when JZ wants to buy 2 new planes for presidential use and rightly so - he should be prepared to fly with the National Carrier SAA with one wife only accompanying him if necessary. FF Pieter Mulder could do the same but because he is just Opposition he could use economy. State sponosred flight should be capped at a certain figure as well as their accomodation. The money saved could go towards education or fighting crime or Health.

      charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-08-01 20:37

You are right and some of the flights were international flights which affects the average. There is also the matter of the \official travel agent\, sure to add a hefty commission. The question is whether all the flights were official.
