N Cape ANC has moved forward: Block

Upington - The ANC in the Northern Cape has moved away from the embarrassing past that marred its previous elective conference, said provincial chairperson John Block.

"That conference was characterised by violence, chaos, ill-discipline and complete disregard for the dignity of the ANC," he said, delivering his political report on Thursday night.

Some 800 delegates have gathered for the Northern Cape's 2012 elective conference in Upington.

Block said the party had convened the majority of its branches in the run-up to the conference under normal conditions, free of violence and disruptions.

"We are meeting here under no threat of violence, intimidation, or under the threat of court interdicts. The unity of our movement is non-negotiable, finish and klaar."

He said the party had reaffirmed the right of members to contest leadership positions without labelling them as "enemies", and without such contest destroying the unity of the ANC in the province.

"It's their right to be members of the movement, and it's your right to give or deny them the privilege to lead," he told delegates.

On Friday, delegates were voting for two contested posts in the provincial ANC's top five leadership positions.

One was for chairperson of the party, a contest between Block and Godfrey Oliphant. The other was for provincial secretary, between current holder Zamani Saul and challenger Archie Lucas.

Block, the MEC for finance in the province, is currently facing charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering related to the sale of water purification plants.

The conference ends on Sunday.

I thought John Block was in jail..

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-06-08 14:47

He is connected to the ANC elite, he gets a get-out-of-jail-free card.

      Rob - 2012-06-08 15:35

Handsome devil, is'nt he ? Could land a 747 on that head.

  • CharlesDumbwin - 2012-06-08 14:48

This is the problem with the rooling putty, this ANC regime. When their connected friends mess up, they don't get fired or imprisoned, they just get moved to another province and given a new portfolio to mismanage. I think this is the same guy who tried to bride/persuade other constitutional court judges. This guy is deep in the ANC's back pocket.

Listen here white folks.go to yo DA Conference if Eva there is one and Elect yo leaders n c if they wl Eva lead our counrty..

      Revelgen - 2012-06-08 16:19

Thabani - it's NOT about colour, it's about results and doing a good job. And under the ANC, South Africa has slipped backwards in virtually every respect - in employment, effectiveness of municipalities, world rankings, crime - you name it. How can you simply pull out the race card to cover over FACTS, yes FACTS?? Get real man.

      Antin - 2012-06-08 18:16

Thabani, if you want to comment fine. But do us a favour: make some sense. And pray tell: who IS this Eva you are on about? I think Eva Longoria and Eva Mendes are both hot, but AFAIK, they're not with the DA. At any rate if either stands for the Presidency of SA, I'll support them. Anything, ANYTHING! over what we have now.

      Irene - 2012-06-08 18:18

WTF are you trying to say fool?

  • Malans - 2012-06-08 16:07

When a political ganster and thug says they are unified he obviously means that the opposition was made an offer they could not refuse. Some people have absolutely no shame and are corrupt to the core.

  • Fanie - 2012-06-08 16:27

In my opinion, as long as John Block is part of the ANC in the NC, there was no moving forward at all. In fact, moving backwards will be more accurate.

  • Antin - 2012-06-08 18:06

For the life of me, I cannot see why this headline? Of course it may be true that if one departs from an "absolutely chaotic mess" and moves to a "fraudulent, corrupt and racketeering mess" one could speak of progress -but no, "moving forward" is not an apt headline! In fact this corrupt ogre should shut the frack up!

  • Irene - 2012-06-08 18:19

Typical cANCer style. The more filthy and corrupt you are, the higher you get in the cANCer. I'd be so ashamed to be a supporter of this pond scum party.

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-06-08 21:36

How stupid are the NC delegates to vote for a person who has corruption charges against him....nowhere else in the world does this happen. But even more amazing... is that the anc allow this man to retain his position in the anc party. Northern Cape when your Province has no money to give you the services you badly need....don't's your fault for voting a criminal.
