Durban - National Freedom Party (NFP) councillors are being offered bags of money to defect, secretary general Nhlanhla Khubisa said on Wednesday.

"There is reliable information from reliable sources that certain individuals go around carrying large bags with large sums of money to be given to them [the councillors], in order for them to desert their parties and join those that give them monies, cars and promise to give them tenders."

Khubisa said he could not give more details about who was offering the councillors bribes or with which parties they were aligned.

Jeremiah Mavundla, the NFP mayor for Nongoma, said NFP councillors in Nongoma had received the offers.

Asked what the party's policy was and what it could offer voters in the 2014 election, Khubisa said its manifesto still had to be finalised.
