NPA: Shaik paid Zuma wives

2008-01-01 18:54
line

Durban - Jacob Zuma's former wives, including Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, are alleged to have received payments from convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik.

Shaik is alleged to have paid Dlamini-Zuma a total of R22 000 in three separate payments, while Kate Zuma allegedly received six payments totalling R23 400.

These details emerged from a spread sheet which listed 783 payments allegedly made by Shaik and his companies from October 25 1995 to July 1 2005, totalling R4 072 499.85.

The spread sheet was attached to the indictment against the ANC president, filed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

It details amounts as low as R25 - allegedly for a "mini car valet" - and R400 000 paid allegedly for the "development of his traditional residential village estate in Nkandla".

The indictment was filed on Friday last week, shortly after midday as Zuma was about to hand out presents to children in his home district of Nkandla.

Zuma faces 16 charges in total - one count of racketeering, two counts of corruption, one count of money laundering and 12 counts of fraud.

Divorce settlement

The two South African subsidiaries of Thales International (formerly Thomson-CFS) - Thint Holding (Southern Africa) Pty Ltd and Thint (Pty) Ltd - each face a charge of racketeering, and two counts of corruption.

The 16-page spread sheet, prepared by auditing firm KPMG, classifies the payments as "Zuma wife", with each payment having the initials of the two women - NC Zuma and KM Zuma.

Dlamini-Zuma, whose second name is Clarice, divorced the ANC president in 1997, while Kate Mantsho Zuma committed suicide on December 8 2000.

Sapa reliably understands that the alleged payments to Dlamini-Zuma relate to the couple's divorce settlement, the details of which would not be publishable in terms of the publication restrictions of South African divorce legislation.

The first of the three alleged payments to Dlamini-Zuma was on March 25 1997 and the last on June 4 2001. Dlamini-Zuma had four children.

The first of the alleged payments to Kate Zuma was on October 25 1995, and the last on September 8 1999.
