Cape Town - DA MPs walked out when the so-called "Nkandlagate" report was tabled in a joint standing committee of intelligence (JSCI) meeting, party leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said on Thursday.

This happened after the committee received the report on the R200m upgrade of President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead behind closed doors on Wednesday.

"The Democratic Alliance has long held that the JSCI is not the appropriate committee to deal with the Nkandlagate report and that it should be redacted," Mazibuko said.

"Parts concerning the costs and possible corruption relating to this upgrade should be dealt with by the Portfolio Committee of Public Works, an open and transparent committee."

The tabling of the report in a JSCI meeting, which is always closed to the public, was a "clear attempt to bury and conceal its contents".

DA MPs were refusing to participate in the JSCI's processing of the classified report.

The party was seeking legal opinion on how it could force the public works department to make the report a public document.

"The opinion will determine whether or not his [Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi] refusal has any basis in law," Mazibuko said.

"If we accept this bogus process, it has the potential to affect other reports on this matter, like the report from Public Protector, which is due to be released soon," she said.
