No clarity on land DG Gwanya

2010-07-16 21:25
Cape Town - There was no clarity on Friday on the status of rural development and land reform director general Thozi Gwanya, following Democratic Alliance claims he has resigned.

"We know nothing about it. We are as surprised as anyone," department spokesperson Eddie Mohoebi said.

Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti's spokesperson Mtobeli Mxotwa was also in the dark, saying he had heard nothing about it so far from either Nkwinti or Gwanya.

Earlier, DA spokesperson Annette Steyn said her party had "received confirmation from a number of sources" that Gwanya had resigned.

"We understand that this follows the findings of an auditor general's report, which was requested by the DA," she said.

If this was indeed the case and a senior official had been compelled to resign on the basis of its findings, there could be little doubt that the information contained therein was a matter that needed to be brought to the public's attention.

Steyn said the DA had "verified" Gwanya's resignation with a senior bureaucrat in the department, a senior policy official in the department, and an ANC legislator.

"With the department having yet to confirm Mr Gwanya's departure, it is essential that they now state publicly exactly what the situation is," she said.
