No comment on Malema remarks: ANC

2012-07-12 12:13

Johannesburg - The ANC said on Thursday it will not respond to expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's remarks about President Jacob Zuma because he is no longer a party member.

"Julius is not a member of the ANC. He has been insulting the president. Why would we respond to someone who is not a member?" spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.

He was speaking during an offer to comment on Malema's remarks on Wednesday night that some ANC leaders were establishing fear and intimidation in the party, and that it had been a mistake backing Zuma for president.

Addressing a "Friends of the Youth League" function, Malema said while he had spoken the same language as Zuma on issues such as "land grabs" by early Boers - although not in Zulu as Zuma had - it was him who had been charged with poor discipline.

Violations

He criticised Zuma for not understanding the ANCYL because he had never been a youth league member. It could not immediately be established whether this was true.

Malema was expelled from the ANC in April over a number of violations of the party's rules.

Mthembu defended measures taken to keep Zuma's commemorative lecture in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, on Tuesday on track saying: "We took serious measures. Our own security was there. The lecture continued without hindrance, it was not disrupted."

During a lecture on former president Nelson Mandela, as part of the ANC's centenary programme, police removed five people from the venue for allegedly being part of a disturbance.

Some observers complained of the apparent heavy-handedness of security guards, and the effects of what seemed to be teargas or pepper spray to control the crowd.

Disrespect

Mthembu said everyone knew there was a possibility there might be trouble. Limpopo is Malema's home province.

"These people come and disrespect an ANC event," said Mthembu. "It was part of the plan that Zuma should not deliver a lecture. Do they expect the ANC to fold itself? You cannot allow an ANC event to be disrupted."

He felt there had not been any "high-handedness" by security. Any follow-up disciplinary processes would be initiated by the ANC's provincial structure.

At the same time, Mthembu said the party would not comment on a report on a leaked letter penned by ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, lamenting the party's poor treatment of the Mandela family.

"Any issues between ourselves and Mam' Winnie are between ourselves and Mam' Winnie."

In the letter, Madikizela-Mandela reportedly complained that Mthembu had not even called her to wish her a speedy recovery after an operation, and had said her ankle had been operated on when it was actually her knee when he spoke about it publicly.

I do agree though, the fat piece of rubbush does not derserve the publicity he gets. A person can smell garbage a mile away even before fatboy opens his mouth. • tphaiphai - 2012-07-12 12:44

Jackson is confused and the ANC is having a problem with Malema whom they know , he is a threat to their way to Magaung. They respond many politicians who are not card carrying members like Helen , Zapiro , Ruel etc. Let top 5 swallow their selfish pride and accept that guy to avoid . There are so many things that will happen. A ticking bomb is about to explode as Vavi keeps on saying. ANC is a broader church which is supposed to be composed of all characters , but some are bearing negative attitudes to others. Jackson , you will not be a spokesperson for ever. Leaderships come and go. Think twice while u r under no influence of something.

It's interesting that Zuma as a President has probably had more issues just getting respect than any other Politician or President in SA history. Even the previous Apartheid prime ministers had the respect of their ANC counter parts, yet Zuma gets nothing. Ultimately, what does that say about a man who is in office as the Head of the current administration ? Sounds allot like Tiberius Caesar, Hitler, yes Bob too and so many others who had so few good qualities as human beings that they had to brandish their authority as a weapon and beat submission from their own people.

      abram.spamers - 2012-07-12 15:42

They are hoping he will get bored and go away. This is probably the best Malema could have hoped for... next article you see will read about how he says "Zuma is ignoring this problem like all the other problems blah blah..." Julius will become a huge headache for the ANC if they don't do something about him. You don't expel one of your most powerful/popular members and expect the damage to be small.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-07-12 13:21

The ANC is correct and I usually never agree with them, but they are correct just to ignore him. He has been thrown out so no matter what he says, he is an ordinary person, like you or me so we dont get any airtime from the ANC either. Its time they did'nt something about his twin Lamola, they need to deal with him in the same way. Send them to the SACP they are also having a hard time trying to worm their way into the ANC. The twins can were red caps now and sit on the naughty step outside LOOT ALL THE MONEY HOUSE.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-12 13:23

  • collen.masetla - 2012-07-12 13:39

But you respond to zille, is zille an ANC member? Maybe this is all because Malema is saying the truth that you realise you cannot go against.\r\n\r\nWhen people were misbehaving when Mbeki was suppose to be removed, why did you shut your mouth? Why was there no beating of people in a brutal manner?\r\n\r\nYou guys think you are smart but watch the space, just keep watching because we will soon be talking post Mangaung where the ANC will be cleaning itself. No corrupt people will be allowed, i mean those who cannot even go to court or allow investigation to prove themselves innocent, zuma. No drunkards will be given any post, you mthembu. No one with fraud will still hang around, mdluli, they will have to go to jail. Etc

  • sefako.mokgalaka - 2012-07-12 13:39

Excellent decision. Some people are just unbelievable, when Malema was still an ANC member and he said something in the media that they did not like, they make noise about ANC not responding or voicing their opinion. And now they want them to also comment on a matter that is not internal - double standards.

  • johnathon.masters - 2012-07-12 13:53

Why don’t South Africans all club together by putting R25 into a trust fund for Julius, and then pack him off to St Helena (Napoleon sent there) where he can live in sponsored luxury with a large harem, a special theatre room for playing back videos of his most successful speeches, endless clips of toy toying, dustbin overturning, & mob violence and destruction of public property. The trust can be topped up regularly by eager public donors, to make sure he never starts pining for home. To satisfy his mega ego for publicity, we can make up false film clips of famous political figures praising his past successes at destabilizing South Africa, and his determination to destroy South Africans fragile economy, kill international investment, shrink business development, condemning the countries poor to joblessness and lack of service delivery. He is determined to collapse our commercial farming industry, resulting in hunger added to the poor’s miserable existence. Economics Lesson 101 – No money = No Development. Hopefully coms on the island will be so poor that attempts at contacting SA will disappear into the ether. As long as kept happy in St Helena, his harem giving good loving, his special bullet proof Range Rover being kept in top condition , and his booze cabinet full of Jonny Walker, and his Tag Hueher watch replaced with the latest model, then I am sure the risk of him returning can be kept to a minimum.

  • watsongeorgejan - 2012-07-12 13:57

Don't respond to Malema, don't respond (don't respond) x infinity..using the don't buy City press rythm.

  • chris.khanye - 2012-07-12 13:59

Malema and his side-kick calls that those who still follow them must fight back during service delivery protests when confronted by police - it is nothing new. We've seen violent service delivery protests since time memorial, so it's not something new invented yesterday during a ranting stupor by the two misfits. I like people who point fingers at others - Zuma's Nkandla the New York of rural KwaZulu Natal would equal - Ga-Malema palace in downtown Sandton. A Zulu commandeered the SAPS, Army and vigilantes to attack protestors in Thohoyandou equals - Malema unleashes the police at the Limpopo ANCYL Elective Conference. Nationalize everything except Limpopo Public Services - Privatized to benefit Malema Trust Fund. Zuma is undemocratic and a dictator equals - ANCYL regions and branches suspended and put under administration for daring to have a different opinion. Malema says Zuma is promiscuous equal - Zille said so after the 2009 General Elections ANCYL and MKVA threatened to make Western Cape ungovernable. What's the difference? Malema as always - hypocritical. That's been his trademark over the years but will always appeal to anarchists. The only thing very worrying and it's tantamount to Unita and Renamo leaders tendencies - is Malema's call for his deranged supporters to disrupt and fight the ANC whenever it's gathering. Has Malema finally and publicly declared War against the ANC? What about the tribalistic utterances of Limpopo ANCYL?

  • noorodien.solomon - 2012-07-12 13:59

Noorodien@mweb. Helen Zille seems to be the one that cares about peoples lives. The army made a difference in the past, why not now. Zuma is protected and his village is growing so is his children his children still to be born from his future wifes will overun the country and we are paying.

Even you journalists must help us and question mthembu whether brett, zapiro, zille, khoza of nedbank are all ANC members that mthembu and anc respond to them. They fear Malema, simple. But the way the likes of mthembu contradict themselves, it puts ANC at risk, so the current anc leadership is what cost the anc votes.\r\n\r\nLook at Limpopo and Eastern Cape education system, the national leadership under zuma and motshekga took over and books were not delivered for 6months after they took over and that never happened before they took over.\r\n\r\nThe same time they struggle to fix and talking money problems, a deposit of millions was paid for zuma's jet of 2billion and imf borrowed 16billion by SA all under zuma. Is high time Motlanthe, Tokyo or Vavi takes over ANC.
