Kimberley - Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed during her State of the Province address on Friday.
A member of the public who attended the address and did not want to be identified, said paramedics immediately rushed to assist her.
“She just started to slur during her speech and collapsed.”
The speech, which also marks the official opening of the legislature, took place at the CRC Church in Kimberley. An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards to transport Jenkins to hospital.
A representative of the premier’s office, Mafu Davids, confirmed that Jenkins had been rushed to hospital.
“We are concerned about her health, but we do not have any other information at this stage,” he said.
Davids said Jenkins was almost finished with her speech when the incident happened.
He said invited guests are going to proceed to lunch while they await news of Jenkins’s condition. Hundreds of people from across the province and national and international guests attended the event.
Boeboe van Wyk, the speaker of the provincial legislature, announced that the event had adjourned.
He said they will make a statement to the media later and an announcement would follow on when the State of the Province address will resume.
