One plate for all in ANC motorcade

2012-04-20 11:02

Pietermaritzburg - The KwaZulu-Natal ANC travelling centenary jamboree is allegedly flouting the rules of the road.

Recent pictures on Facebook show at least three cars with exactly the same number plates - ANC 100 - ZN - which is in violation of South Africa’s Road Traffic Act.

It was not immediately clear when or where the pictures were taken.

The luxury cars are an Audi and Mercedes Benz with members of the ANC dressed in party regalia either standing in the cars waving flags or standing next to them.

One of the photographs even shows a traffic officer monitoring the motorcade.

Illegal

A senior traffic official who declined to speak on record because he had not seen the plates said: “I can say for sure that is illegal.”

He said while vanity plates were allowed, it was illegal to have the exact same number plates on two different cars or to use vanity plates without the department’s authority.

ANC provincial secretary-general Sihle Zikalala said the party was not aware that there were cars violating the rules of the road by using the same licence plates.

“We are looking at this matter and we do not know these cars. We would like to get the full details of the vehicles.”

The Democratic Alliance expressed concern in a statement, saying the anomaly was further evidence of provincial cabinet’s inability to separate state from party and how the goalposts were moved to accommodate those within the party’s elite clique.

The DA said it remained concerned about the celebrations and would be calling on the premier to confirm that they were not being funded by the taxpayers.

“We are looking at this matter and we do not know these cars. We would like to get the full details of the vehicles.” Really? What more do you need?

      Don.Tandy - 2012-04-20 11:40

We have two sets of laws - one for the ANCorruption gangsters, and one for the rest of us. How else do you explain people like fatboy, the evil one, etc, etc, being allowed to disregard the laws with impunity.

  • Herman - 2012-04-20 11:10

      Don.Tandy - 2012-04-20 11:42

We don't have traffic officials anymore, only 'fund managers'.

  • mholthuysen - 2012-04-20 11:15

Laws - what laws... the anc is above all laws, don't care for laws, and don't give a damn about laws - after all as long as the anc believes that they "own" the country - what should we expect? Tossers!

  • Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 11:15

It's real, I saw these vehicles outside the Durban Chamber of Commerce where the ANC offices were (I say 'were' because after the damages caused to the office after drunken celebrations, I am not sure if they still use the place).

  • Jabulani - 2012-04-20 11:28

I m proundly ANC man on the street. My advice to the ruling party: if u let Zuma to rule for the second term, then expect few seats in the parliament. Be wise! We all know who's responsible behind those illegal car registration number. DA u have a case!

      andile.fihlela - 2012-04-20 11:39

Mjay u making a very reckless statement. Where have u seen a prsident dealing with car registrations in any where in the world. Yet u say u proudly anc. I doubt very much.

      Gieljam - 2012-04-20 12:40

Its nice to see a man coming up for what he believes in in your case the ANC .You wont believe it I "like" them also because no one can say there isn't a dull ? moment here ,with all the nonsense they catch on.Problem is it is costing SA dearly so "Kona manje" we will be referred to as South Greece or is it creased ?

  • Andrew - 2012-04-20 11:33

Typical of the ANC one set of rules for them and a totally differnt set for all the rest. Absolutely typical of their acceptance of the law. Watch nothing will happen and no one will be prosecuted as the NPA are no longer independent thanks to Zuma and his criminals.

  • andile.fihlela - 2012-04-20 11:33

This is not only lazy but poor journalism. Seeing pics from facebook then u have a story.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 11:52

I saw the cars with the number plates. You can't deny the truth.

      Shirley - 2012-04-20 11:56

Tony Lapson: You can if you are anc!

      mholthuysen - 2012-04-20 12:29

Yes viva anc viva - we are blind, we don't like facts, we just follow the tossers who ruin our country into the abyss - andile - FACTS make the world and not FICTION! POOR judgement - not poor journalism!

      Phillys - 2012-04-20 12:54

so the illegality of it is not an issue for you Andile?

  • Denzil - 2012-04-20 11:43

The Durban Motorcade yesterday in the City Centre was dangerous. Although 4 Metrol police bikes flanked the motorcade. I am still sure that it is illegal to hang out of the motorvehicle. These cars were driving at approx 60km/h with people hanging out of the vehicle - cornering at this speed also. Some people feel a Motorcade is a F1 Grand Prix. 2 Convertible BMW's and a HUMMER led the motorcadem, with scantily clad women. Its a slap in the face of the poor working class who take a taxi to work everyday.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 12:20

They don't see it that way. To them, it is a sign of power and hope for the future.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-20 13:00

Hanging out the cars?. They should have driven into a wall.

  • Rob - 2012-04-20 11:48

First test of ethics and moral fibre is whether there will be any offical statement with appropriate condemnation. Second test is to see if there is any attempt to raise the bar by making a public example perpretators. Of course gangsters and immature people in general believe that they are above taking a public interest position, so don't hold your breath.

  • Anesh - 2012-04-20 11:52

    Nice cars...pity they stolen lol

  • Carry - 2012-04-20 12:02

IS THIS THE NEW NUMBER PLATE FOR ALL THE CARS USING THE TOLL ROADS ?.... SEEMS TO BE LEGAL..................

  • Voiceinthedesert.co.za - 2012-04-20 12:05

Shame the poor black people always involved in a struggle. first they had no rights now they are above the law wow what a leap. i bet one of our super educated competent traffic department workers could not figure this one out. there is a reason two number plates can't be the same. but don't worry no-one is looking let's go for lunch or wait let's steal some tax payers money

  • Moruakgomo - 2012-04-20 12:26

mu friend got married last year and briday convoy (10 cars) had plate numbers with the bride and grooms names on it .it was for that occasion this seem like the centenary celerbration drive throught some neighbourhood. was this really worth reporting

      Abee - 2012-04-20 12:42

      U just did.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-20 13:03

Moruakgome. Yes, it was worth reporting. We like to try and keep up with what idiotic happening our illustrious leaders are coming up with every day.

  • Gieljam - 2012-04-20 12:29

This official saying it isn't legal must , still be of the old order , not properly inducted ,very brave or just plain honest , which is rare lately. This again shows that even the supplier is ignorant of his legal duties and just after the money most probably having charged them a small fortune to make the plates. All involved to be slapped over the fingers with a wet bus ticket immediately.

  • craig.eksteen2 - 2012-04-20 12:40

Maybe Malema has a point and that Zuma and his connections are dictators - they seem to think that the ANC owns SA in its entirity. No regard for even the most basic of legislation.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-20 13:04

I don't know about being dictators, Crooks yes, that we do know.

  • morwen.fourie - 2012-04-20 12:48

Will the ANC please stand up (legally) and comment? we are waiting.........

  • wikus.schalkwyk - 2012-04-20 12:53

    Our Tax Dollars at work!

  • Cornelius - 2012-04-20 12:53

Surely this is not worthy to be reported as news. The context of the said \crime\ should be understood. If the ANC was using the same number for criminal purposes then, yes it was going to be a matter of concern. Now the party is celebrating 100 years of existence! Instead of looking for trivial issues we should actually congratulate them for a worthy milestone.

  • Jacqui - 2012-04-20 12:56

Why can't they do this?, They are the ANC, thus way above the law.

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-04-20 12:56

the owners would have been fined BIG TIME if Bheki Cele was still KZN transport mec , ask SA Roadlink

  • bluzulu - 2012-04-20 13:02

My My , It is this easy to mislead so many first world educated citizens. This is clearly a procession at a celebration . The fact that the article indicates the presence of the SAPS hence a controlled environment. The Plates were removed after the Celebratory antics. It was a Moeshle JOL. Ohh and vehicles are not stolen, Thanks.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 13:14

Like I said before, saw 2 of those cars outside Durban chamber of commerce with the plates attached.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-20 13:21

      Your credibility credentials are?

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 13:24

I saw it, of course you wouldn't (want) to believe me anyway.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-20 13:37

      Any Pics?

      bluzulu - 2012-04-20 13:50

The point is this article indicates how easy it is to manipulate RSA society. the media in this country has great power it seems. Think of the vehicles as a float in a Parade in a controlled environment. This is not illegal as the SAPS would have verified that the vehicles are Legally roadworthy and Licenced etc. Even a completely honest Legal activity breeds contempt. Seems to be the house rules at this site.......Venting site, I suggest we could turn a couple turbines and add to the national grid with the amount of hot air created at NEWS24.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-20 15:17

Watchman, A gent (utilize this term loosely) of your age should have a better comment to post. How about something reasonable rather than a personal attack( Which I have started to enjoy actu Truths are hard to swallow.......To me , on this site with it's demographics , Thumbs down are actually Thumbs up to me.

      Piet - 2012-04-20 15:21

It is against the law idiot! Nuber plates must not be easily removable and must be fixed permanently to the car. BTW that is a law dreamt up by your party!

      bluzulu - 2012-04-20 15:28

The vehicles are floats in a parade under SAPS control, Not a drive down the coast on a Public Motorway(which is illegal). Idiot.............Not a good term for this discussion. I have never voted for any Political party, Thanks.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-21 09:26

The Poncy/Pansy North Shore...hahahahahahaahahaaa. I'm a WESTY bro.........Never lived on the North Shore , Thats were the Paler Rats live yeah.

hey my African brother, wait a bit and use your brain and u will see were the fuzz is, is bot just about an occasion or something is about principles don't u see ANC they act out of good ethics behaviour an ethical man/person will know that is illegal/violate laws of the roads hence thy wouldn't go ahead to do such, but since ANC crew is filled with unethical behaviour they can't just even obey such a simple law... That would never even make them become reach I wonder what will they do if they had an opportune to violate laws that will make them rich, will all know this answer, so u can question the integrity of such people

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-20 14:51

Really? Whose wedding? This isn't about being against the ANC, it is about being law abiding citizens. Celebrate by all means, but don't break the law. Lead by example

  • Anakin - 2012-04-20 14:41

That's what will happen with the connected elite at the tollgates...they will all have funny number-plates like ANC-GOV-120 so no-one knows where to send the traffic fines or e-toll invoices to. It will have an address like No.78 Govt Garage 2, Soweto where such address doesn't exist in the 1st place...and don't forget the blue lights, it's part of the clique culture.

  • Mfana - 2012-04-20 14:49
