People pick Gauteng ANC councillors

2010-10-13 17:13

Johannesburg - The ANC in Gauteng will involve the broader community, irrespective of whether they are ANC members, in the selection of candidates for the local government selection next year.

"We want to involve the community members in the identification of ANC candidates...we will get reviews of members of the public before the candidates are registered and confirmed," said ANC Gauteng provincial secretary David Makhura, at a media briefing in Johannesburg.

The ANC has spoken out against ill discipline in its ranks which includes using money to buy votes or positions.

Makhura said the ANC would approach the local government elections in 2011 in a different way to help prevent this from happening.

Candidates would be tested against the views of the community at large.

"Candidates will really be tested against their own potential and standing in the community," Makhura said.

Guidelines for the nominations of candidates would be taken to ANC branches in the coming months.

Makhura said involving the broader community would hopefully raise the level of interest in local government elections amongst South Africans.
